1.) Isn't this restricting interstate commerce? I thought there were stiff penalties for doing that. I guess if the government breaks it's own laws then it's not illegal. Wait, didn't President Nixon do that? I don't claim to know that much about it but I seem to recall the statement "If the President does it it's NOT illegal." Maybe too many movies, but I know nobody is supposed to restrict interstate commerce.
2.) I received a box from Club Snus that was literally taped back together. Apparently the box broke (not at the seam) and was repacked and mended w/ USPS tape. It certainly looked like it happened in transit. If something like this happened w/ any shipment of snus after June whatever it may be problematic. This is why the companies won't take the risk. Northerner used to write "Crafts" on their customs declarations. Now it says Snus.
3.) I'd be shocked if you could pick-up from Northerner. I asked that of GetSnus 'cos my company just moved it's headquarters to a location 8 miles from their warehouse and I go there every month. It would've been sweet if I could have knocked that out on the same trip. They said no.
4.) They can't scan the mail. Not all of it anyhow. The post office is supposed to ask you if there are any "liquids, perishables, or hazardous items" but even at that I only get asked that about 50% of the time. Besides, you could say whatever you wanted to. How the hell would they know what's in it? Tampering with mail is a federal offense. If they were to open a package to check if there is contraband in there then they would have to open every package. It's not practical. I doubt there would be tobacco sniffing dogs. I could see pot getting sniffed out and other powdered substances (coke, heroin, etc.) but not tobacco. All you need it a postal worker go outside for a butt then handle your package and (that sounded funny...handle your package) and there would be trace elements of tobacco picked up by the sniffer.
The way I see it it's like Mafia Rules w/ this PACT crap.
Have no fear fellow snusers...one can very easily acquire just about anything you can imagine in the US. They can't keep the illegal stuff out so I wouldn't worry too much about the legal stuff. It seems they want to make sure you buy it in a store so they can collect your taxes. That's all. Prohibition didn't work, making pot illegal didn't work, stiff penalties for DUI doesn't work, and the list goes on and on. Now if they shot people for snus...that might work but thankfully that won't happen.
I think it's ground breaking legislation for the fact that it might be that first step down a very slippery slope but I don't think we've got THAT much to worry about. There will always be ways.
