Same thing happened with gasoline. Orriginally the first cars had the idea of using ethanol or other similar products as fuel but it became lucrative to use gasoline, a byproduct of other petrolium products, to be used as a fuel because they needed to get rid of the waste, and it was more expensive. Hence no more ethanol.
