Swedish Match May Have Indian Competition

Realtid.se reviews India's largest snus, which is about to launch big in Sweden.
Indian snus Chaini Khaini is about to take up the fight with Swedish Match on the Swedish snus buyers' favor. After having been on sale in a limited number of outlets for a few months, according to informed sources, soon it will be time for a major launch, with the help of Swedish Match (the giant must distribute their competitors' products.)
Behind Chaini Khaini is Indian Harsh International, which is India's largest snus player - even if the snus market in India is rather limited compared to the Swedish market. In Sweden, there are two of the company's total of six varieties, mangoes and "spice".
On Friday afternoon, Realtid.se aquired two cans Chaini Khaini, one of each flavor available, in the store La BonBoniere Confectionery in Sveavägen in Stockholm. The store, which is run by Fadi Elias, seems primarily focused on a wide range of confectionery, but also a well-stocked snusfridge. The Indian snus is moderately visible in the fridge, but outside is a small position with two boxes, designed to attract buying.
- "I sell a couple of cans Chaini Khaini a day, but it is a difficult market to penetrate", says Fadi Elias among customers; there is frantic activity.
- There will be new varieties all the time, maybe in a month, he estimates.
Suddenly, Tullinge Soccer sports manager Sibbe Turanli makes an entrance and buys two boxes: a General Portion for a friend, and one of Gothenburg Rapé for himself. He tests a portion Chaini Khaini with mango flavor out of the box Realtid.se had just acquired. After a few minutes, he delivers his opinion.
How was it?
- Too dry, it is not something I intend to switch to.
Turanli says that as a snus consumer he is pretty brand loyal, and that makes it pretty hard to change. Although he is in favor of mangoes he thinks he will not be changing to Chaini Khaini, despite the fact that a box costs 32 crowns and thus is SEK 8 cheaper than his favorite brand.
Back at the office Realtid.se is testing the mango version of Chaini Khaini. It feels acidic lower lip, and some dizziness appears after a while. The feeling passes after half an hour directly to nausea. It all recalls the last time Realtid.se's reporter tried snus, a portion-General in 2002, when a former colleague at work offered (editorial only, habitual users are unfortunately out of town on Friday).
However, nausea is more intense this time, perhaps because the lunch break was devoted to find a store that sold Chaini Khaini rather than to eat. Three stores - a 7-Eleven, a Pressbyrå, and a small independent tobacco player - visited before Fari Elias' store was found.
According to Swedish Match is about one million snuff users in Sweden. One-fifth of them are women.

Sibbe Turanli, snus user, will not switch from Gothenburg Rapé, he is happy to pay 25 percent more per can after testing Chaini Khaini.

:!: :!: Its distribution will be handled by Swedish Match, which means Northerner and BuySnus will also have access to this snus also. :!: :!:
