I like ettan a lot, but I can see why General is the biggest name. For a while I sort of put general in the back seat, but it really is my favorite snus. It just has great flavor ( the loose that is, the portions are sorta meh).
SMs product push.

plus the refrigerator is intriguing. A guy visits his regular tobacconist and sees this weird little fridge sitting on the counter. "Oh, so THIS is the real snus stuff huh? I may give this stuff a shot, wife keeps giving me hell about the spitting anyways, lets see if I can pull a fast one on her with this."
I dunno, somethin like that

To me, I think the refrigerator aspect to snus is a big detriment. Many stores that could carry Swedish snus can't because they lack the space for a fridge, even a small one. Also they prefer a tobacco product that doesn't require them to keep an eye on expiration dates. They just want to stock it until their supply has been bought out, which may not happen until well past the expiration date.

PassedPawn understood exactly what I was meaning to convey. Currently only a few select tobacco speciality shops carry General, and have a special fridge. I'd like to see real snus be carried by local retail shops, and gast stations, groceries, etc., and I think the need for refrigeration is the big hold up for this. I SM makes other tobacco products, and if they could devise a way for no refrigeration, and longer shelf life, the General cans could be right next to Redman, Skoal, at the corner gas station, and SM could attach coupons to their non snus items for a free can of General, and people would get it to try, also just having it at the local store, people will get it as something new to try. I personally never go to specialty tobacco shops, so I've yet to see real snus sold, but all the gas stations have Camel SNUS. I did try to go to a tobacco shop yesterday that is said to have a General fridge, but they were closed on Sundays and I didn't know.

Here in NYC we have a lot of the small Indian candy/tobacco shops and chain pharmacies, such as Duane Reade and CVS. They're basically the largest outlets for tobacco products to the average consumer and they're not going to carry snus if it requires TLC with a fridge. They would need a "dry" snus that they could just shelve and forget about until sold. But I guess that can't be made without impacting the flavor or increasing the amount of TSNAs in snus.

I believe adding 1 extra step in the production, dropping the product, portioned or loose, in a sealed foil bag(maybe vacuum packed), and then this being placed in the sealed can(finished product), would halt the need for refrigidated shelf storage, and greatly lengthen the shelf life. This way, these cans could be marketed to any retailer. Keeping snus a niche speciality item that requires special treatment, and only in speciality stores, I believe, will only keep snus use a very minimum in the US, and if we can't buy it in the mail at some future date, it will probably go the way of the 8-track tape.
