I just resurrected Nick & Johnny Original from the grave

I think we can all agree that snus is not the fun thing it was back in this forum's heyday when you'd get a new Swedish flavour and recipe every month ... but since it's got really expensive to import here I've been experimenting with Prillan DIY packs. They come as a packet of 500 portions - dry as a bone and totally raw tobacco flavour ... which in itself is quite nice and not something you can get even with Ettan. The instructions say rehydrate the portions with about 250ml of water with salt and any flavourings of your choice. They sell their own flavourings which come in little bottles like those food colourings come in - flavours are approximations of General, Goteborg's Rape etc.

So I got to thinking along the lines of my home-made snus experiments and decided to make some of my own flavours. They do a pack called DunderPrillan which are strong portions (somewhere between 14 and 20mg/g I think) so I used those.

The flavour profile of Nick & Johnny original was salmiak liquorice with ginger and cinnamon and some smoke flavour in a strong portion.

I boiled up a little liquorice root in a little over 250ml of water for 20 minutes and then strained the root out. Measured exactly 250ml of this liquorice tea in to another saucepan and dissolved 25g sea salt and 1tsp of salmiak (ammonium chloride). Left this to cool a little. Meanwhile I dissolved 4 drops of ginger essential oil and 2 drops cinnamon essential oil in a little high proof alcohol, and added this, along with ⅛ tsp of liquid smoke to the salty-liquorice water. This I combined with the Dunderprillan portions in a large Tupperware container and shook it well. The notes say you should leave it in a fridge for a further 48 hours, but needless to say I have tried it already!

The result is amazing! It's like I've been transported back to 2008 and taken delivery of a fresh roll of Nick & Johnny Original portions. The aroma, the strength, everything is just right.

Now to get on and remember what Claq Qui tasted like!!!

Seasons Greetings to all Snuson members,
