Hello all! So... In a matter of 1 day, I've made the decision to (try to :wink: ) quit smoking using snus... My story sounds a lot like several of yours here that I've read...

Yesterday at the gas station I noticed a Camel Deal. I typically sucker into the deals from them, whatever they may be (Buy 2 get a Free pack, free lighter, free whatever), so I said Give me the deal. What I got this time was a tin of Came Snus. I had noticed a blurb or two in the recent months about this snus stuff from Camel and Marlboro being released in America, but didn't think much of it, thinking I don't like snuff. Well after getting the free pack I looked up snus on wiki and really liked what I was reading, as well as some of the articles there. They also led me here, to the snus on forums. I then popped in a Camel Snus. It was wonderful! Very sweet and nothing at all like snuff. It was WAY better. After much reading, lots of testimonials, a taste test, and growing tired of not being able to run more than 10 feet, wheezing instead of sleeping, and hacking up a lung every morning, I decided I'd give it a try. So, I've placed an order from buysnus.com due to a lot of good reviews here. Here's my order:

I wanted to keep it "Plain"... no flavours, no eucalyptus, no mint/menthol, etc... in hopes of developing my taste from some form of a "plain standard." That being said, which of these do you recommend for the first go? I'm looking for one with a good plain tobacco flavor, maybe a little light on the salty taste that I've heard about.
I tried for alot of varieties, white, mini, original, strong, mini white, loose, portion... I've got a million questions but I don't think I'll bother asking, I've read answers to alot of them, and think i'll enjoy figuring out the rest of them on my own. So, mostly this post was to say hi, how excited I am for my delivery to arrive, and ask which to try first.

It's a pretty good selection you've got there. I'd say go for the General first, it's a good reference point to establish.

Nice that you've ordered both lös and the different portion types - you'll quickly find your favorites that way.

One suggestion though ... don't be afraid of plunging into the flavored snuses. You might be in for a nice surprise!

Good to hear. I've noticed 4 total (including me) that appear to be from MN. That's quite a group! Small world huh? Have any of you found anyplace in the TC Area that sells snus? I doubt it, but thought I'd check.

I have had no luck finding swedish snus in the metro area. It doesn't bother me that much, it's cheaper to order it, and you don't have to pay a "user health impact fee" (usually called a tax for the rest of the normal world).

I'd agree with Subtilo that General is very good starting point. I started with that too and it has a very distinct flavour...

However, I would suggest opening the Grovsnus as well. Very different flavour to General but Grov is a firm favourite of myself and many forum members

Doesn't look like you could go wrong trying any of them first. Out of my first order I hit the N&J and the Gotebörgs first for portion and General as first lös, but had no particular reason for doing so. They are all still ones that I enjoy. Might want to save the Offroad for a while, not one of my favorites and doesn't have the best rep among others here, you may like it, but Offroad seems to have a somewhat limited appeal.
I started after Camel snusing for about three months and never looked back. Enjoy your snus when it comes!

Are you a heavy smoker? If you normally kill a pack a day the mini portions may not do it for you.

You said you liked the sweet. After hitting your order be prepared for no sweet. The goteborg I found was about as close to "sweet" as snus came without getting into mint or some other flavor. Cranberry is cool, Icemint ehh..

If plain, full tobacco taste is what you're looking for, I would try Ettan first; but that's just me. :wink: General is definitely a popular starting point, though (it was mine, and happens to be one of my favorites, as well).

Very, very true.

The Camel stuff tends not to be at all an accurate facsimile of the "authentic" Swedish stuff. Baker is making a good point here!

Don't expect the Camel stuff to be similar to anything on your order list, OP, expect it to be better. :wink:

Also, as a side note...

bakerbarber, you strike me as the type of guy who goes out East to visit his Uncle Hyram fairly often. Am I correct in this assumption?

Just to let you know if all you are looking for is a sweet taste you should hit up PREMIUM PARROTS and see about him sending you some Triumph Original.

Triumph is a sweet snus almost a peach flavor and its got alot of great reviews and is the only snus designed for America by Swedish match for the Lorrilard Co. thats worth a crap...hell its some peoples Favorite snus on here.

Also.... if you do not like those you ordered get a can of
Goteborgs Rape No. 2. I consider it a candy snus and its delicious. Its a nice break from straight up tobacco from time to time and still has 8 mlgs of nic.

Sounds like a nice mix, however I'm not too keen on anything by Offroad. I agree about trying General first, and keep the Nick and Johnny close at hand to stave off any cigarette cravings. My favorites at the moment is Jakobsson's Original, Gotlandssnus Gul loose, Nick and Johnny, and Retro, but would gladly take anything on your list. For pure tobacco taste try the Lucky Strikes you ordered. Oh, and you'll get used to the saltiness really quick.

As for snus in MN, you'll only find Camel and Tourney, Swedish Match doesn't distribute here yet.

As for the sweetness, I saw it mentioned somewhere else that the Camel was pretty far off from the real stuff, so I'm expecting quite a difference. I Smoke about a half pack a day right now, Camel Filters. I couldn't ever do the lights, they left me wanting a smoke more than before I smoked it. So I found that the N&J's seem to be the nic kicker, and the skruf is supposed to be strong too. I figured they would help the cravings, though I plan to do both for a bit while getting used to the snus.

I've got 2 questions. How large are the normal sized portions? My concern is discreetness at work. I'm guessing they'll be noticable, right? I've heard mini portions are very similar to Camel sized, which I know are discreet so they shuold be safe.

Also, with the whole "no spit" thing, I do get a little juce out of the camel pouch, which I am swallowing. I think that it's ok, since you don't need to spit... am I right? Shuold I not be getting any juice? (no juice = no flavor though :cry: ) Do you just stuff a portion in the lip and not move it around at all?

Just relax your lip and no one will notice a normal-sized portion. I tend to fluff them like a pillow which makes them noticable for about the first five minutes. I've been using normal portions at work for months and no one has a clue. For situations that call for even more discression I have been using Mocca +, they're mini's with extra nicotine.

The juice won't hurt, if one really starts to run and makes you feel the need to spit then take it out. I usaully don't mess with the portion as long as I am getting flavor. When I can no longer taste it I'll squeeze it with my lip or move it further back towards my cheek.

A mostly excellent first order, clearly someone has done some homework. If it were me, I would try the Ettan first. What I did when I first started using many, many moons ago. Ettan is the classic, the one, so I figured I would start there. But don't stress it, any of the ones you bought would be good.

As for what to do with the portion when in...anything you want. Most of the time, I just leave it. But sometimes I like to play with it, move it around with my tongue, suck on it a bit. Ultimately, there is no wrong with snus. Heck, throw it your bottom lip if that makes you happy.
