    snus and cig withdrawl symptoms

    Hi,

I got my first shipment of Snus 2 days ago and haven't had a cig since. I'm loving snus so far and only wished I found out about it sooner. I've been trying cold turkey without much success this time (i quit for 6 month about a year ago cold turkey but started up again after drinking).

Something I noticed being on snus for 2 days is that I'm still getting some typical cig withdrawl symptoms like chest and stomach discomfort, cough, and irritated throat. Just curious if anyone else out there who switched from cigs to snus have experienced similar sypmtoms.

    Thanks... and snus on...

I don't know about the chest and stomach discomfort, but when I quit smoking I had a dry cough and some throat irritation for a week or two. I think it was the first stage in my body recovering.

Give it some time.....your body needs to excrete all the nasty shit from smoking. After a few months, you'll start to notice the increase in lung functionality and that's an awesome thing!

Thanks for your comment Adm. I assume you're on snus right now?

Hang in there wangsta! You will probably find that these symptoms will disappear after a few days and you will start to prefer snus over smokes. Congratulations on quitting and keep us updated! I quit in 9/2009 and have only snuck a few smokes since. Pretty soon you will also realize how much better a portion of snus taste over a smoke. I have tried patches, gum, lozenges and cold turkey methods to stop smoking is snus is the easiest by far.

I quit back in May of 2009 and yeah I also noticed a coughed a little bit for 2 weeks or so, and had a sore throat a few days after I quit. Then I felt great.

The other discomfort your feeling to your body adjusting to not smoking anymore and starting to heal itself. Dont worry, everything your feeling is normal. You may also feel shortness of breathe and maybe slight dizziness as more oxygen than ever before is flowing through you.

cool. thanks for all the support guys. this is probably the most supportive forum I've found. I'mma keep it up.. in fact going to the gym now.. best of all i can still have a little portion while at the gym.

i'm loving this catch eucalyptus tho i was never into menthol cigs... i got a sampler pack and so far this is the 2nd one i've tried. the general white was a bit salty. anyways... gym time.

Good luck with giving up the cigarettes. Many of us have been through the same thing as you're going through now. At first, you may miss the hand to mouth thing of smoking, but you'll soon get past that. The nice thing about snus, as you said about snusing at the gym, is that you can have one anytime. Unlike finding a place to smoke these days.

Best of luck to you, explore the many varieties of snus, and welcome to the forums.

                  Welcome to Snuson wangsta.

I suspect you are not getting enough nicotine. Cigs just bombs your system with nicotine. the delivery from snus is much longer and smoother, and eventually, you will come to much prefer it.

But for now, your symptoms are a sign your body still just needs more. My best recommendation is get some extra sterks, and make those the bulk of your usage for a while as your body adjusts. when I first started 3 years ago, I used nothing but sterks for about 4 months straight. I had been a 2 pack a day smoker and needed the extra nicotine in sterks to make it right. Eventually, I transitioned to mostly regulars with no issues, only use a few sterks throughout the day as I feel that extra need for whatever reason.

So get some Thunder, Odens, of General Extra Sterk, I bet you will find it much, much easier to make the transition.

Other thing, many, if not most here, didn't try and quit cigs cold turkey. For many months, I still smoked when that was what I wanted to do. But funny thing, the more I used snus, the less I smoked, until one day, I just quit buying cigarettes. But the best method of quitting cigarettes really seems to just not stress it, use whatever you want for a while. I promise, the snus always winds in the end. And there are hundreds of people here who will testify to that.

And again, welcome. You have come to the right place!!

thanks again guys. Sagedil, I like your point on a smooth transition. If I allow a transition period and eventually stop smoking bc I just have no desire to smoke, it'll be that much more effective than forcing myself to cold turkey. So far its been ok tho I still want a cig to sooth my throat. I'm on my 5th or 6th peice of snus for the day.

Question Sagedil, is sterks extra large size portions? I think I have mini's right now, they're tiny..

Welcome to SnusOn wangsta! I was having the same problem when I started snus as you are. You are not getting enough nicotine in your system. When I first came here, I had stopped smoking cigarettes and was using an electronic cigarette (e-cig). The e-cig was not delivering enough nicotine to cut my cravings. I didn't go into the e-cig or snus wanting to quit smoking...it just happened all on its' own.

The ONLY thing that helped me was going from mini and regular snus to extra sterks ( also per Sages' advice ). This built my nicotine level high enough that it made my transition to just snus really easy. The extra sterks are the same size as the regular portions, so they shouldn't give you much trouble. Right now, I am doing fine by alternating between one extra sterk and either one sterk or one regular portion all day long.

The good thing about snus is you can use them at your own pace, however often and at what strength that you want and need. But I think that extra sterks will be much better in easing your transition, and they kill the cravings ( I was a 2-pack a day smoker for 32 years). They will keep your level at a high enough and steady enough level to transition quite well.

                        thanks deeanne,

I'm going through the mini portions pretty quick (probably gonna do 10 pc today). I think I'll order the extra strength for my next order. I'm tempted to continue smoking and let the quitting come naturally. i've been smoking for 8 years on and off and usually a pack a day. i just hate forcing myself to quit smoking and i think forcing actually makes the habit worse bc you think u r depriving urself of something. the natural way seems way better... this is what i'll do. i'll get another pack of cig and won't force myself to not smoke, if i feel like it then fine. but in the mean time i'll continue to use snus and let the quitting come naturally. even if i still continue to smoke, there is no doubt i'd be smoking much much less since I dont feel that bad after not smoking for 2 days... usually i'd be super grumpy by now...

With snus....you don't have to force yourself to quit. Many people continue smoking when they first start snus. The snus will eventually win out. Believe me, it was true for me and many others. I think you have a good plan there, use the snus, and smoke when you feel like it. You will start smoking less, and snusing more.....it will come.
