    That Didnt take long....

Well, I have been using about two or three snus's for the past week now and I only used one today for the ride to work. It's 2:41 In the afternoon and im really wishing I had one right now to shuve it in it's proper home.

Im afraid to say this, but I think I may be building up an addiction.

Do you think I should hold off using snus for a week or two and continue to use it exclusivly as a treat?

As always, thanks for the replies.

If you don't want to be an addict don't screw with additive substances.

Soliex - IMHO it's everyone's personal choice whether they want to try different things but do take heed of the warning on the tins of Snus "This tobacco product can damage your health and is addictive"

I think most here use Snus as a much safer alternative to cigarettes and to ensure they stay off cigarettes (with NRT not being particularly helpful) I wouldn't personally recommend to anyone trying Snus if they've never come into contact with Nicotine before but that's just my personal opinion.

Here's how my brain thinks.... The 1st thing I think of as soon as I wake up is Snus. I have one under my lip pretty much all day and frequently go to sleep with one under my lip. I think I go through about 2 rolls of large portions a month but hey I can't remember the last cigarette I smoked

It's interesting to see someone trying to seek approval for using a 'drug' like nicotine. Do you have any other vices? Soda, coffee, twinkies? All these things are much worse for you than snus.

I for one couldn't make it without some kind of vice. I could easily go snusless, but why? Until a doctor tells me 'snus is killing you', then it's snus away. You make it sound like you're doing something bad.

I do agree my above statement was stupid.. I dont know what I was thinking.

I very much enjoy snus, it makes me feel better, I think clearer, I have greater a greater attention span while using it and I have actually started to see weight loss from using snus due to nicotine speeding up metabolism.

I suppose the only negative thing for me about using snus is the unknown.

Before you get scared about the unknown, read the research. The best summary of the info is found at : http://www.tobaccoprogram.org/pdf/TC12349.pdf

After reading the whole report as well as others I have personally concluded that the risk is on par with eating BBQ chicken once in a while. Actually Snus might be safer. This from a guy who switched his whole family off of plastic water bottles after seeing too much evidence for cancer.

I have 5 different kinds of snus in my refrigerator/freezer and use once or twice a day. I have never been addicted to anything except, flying, maybe sex when I was a teenager, and I'm seeing if I enjoy snus enough to keep it a part of my life.

Summary: If you don't want addiction in your life, don't play with addictive things. If you want to have an addiction, be addicted to snus, it's way safer than the above mentioned flying or sex.

I have decided that I will take up snus as a daily enjoyment, maybe one to three a day. I just cant deny the awesome feeling I get while enjoying a snus. I really feel better while I have a snus. It relaxes me and makes me enjoy my day just that much more. I have looked at a substantial amount of information regarding snus and It's something I can handle having in my life.

I know it's a bit off topic Doc, but would you elaborate on this please?

                  Thanks,

Soliex. I don't mean to impinge on your personal desicions, nor am I going to scare you with health risks, regardless of however minimal. I just want you to understand that, as some members have mentioned, snus is an addiction. The problem with addiction is that you NEVER see it as a crutch until time has passed and you are a full blown addict. Otherwise no one would be addicted to anything - in the beginning the pro's always outweigh the cons. However, lives change, and someday you may not want to use this anymore, but guess what - quitting is next to impossible for a lot of people. Unless you are quitting cigs, dip, or hard drugs, there is no need to start with snus. If you want to concentrate better - sleep well and drink coffee in the morning. If you want to feel good - take up a sport: adrenaline + endorphins = pleasure-inducing neurostimulation, same shit.
Sorry for a bit of a rant, but you've probably changed opinions on some things in your life before. Snus may be one of them, except you won't be able to do anything about it.

I appreciate your concern and advice that you have provided. I am aware that nicotine is a highly addictive substance. Perhaps its my situation that enticed me to ask my friend to bring me some snus from Norway. Regardless, I treat nicotine with respect and have managed to neglect it when I craved one. I take days off from snus and do just fine. I just enjoy the feeling that I get while using it. My life is dull right now. Music sounds better, I feel better, and it improves my mood.

I am moving back close to my family and friends in three weeks and see my snus use significantly drop or dissapear.

Soliex, just curious. Do you have ADHD? Reason why I ask is you mentioned that it helped you concentrate better. If you do, do some googling on nicotine and ADHD. There have been numerous studies over the past 5 years that show that nicotine is as effective as Ritalin in treating ADHD.

That is why I use snus. I abused meth 20 years ago, and simply do not trust myself to use Ritalin without abusing it. But without nicotine or something to replace it, I am lost and do not function properly.

I have never been diagnosed, I always thought that I had good concentration. But with when I have snus in I definitely feel more concentrated and willing to work. I only think of a few symptoms that I sometimes exhibit in relation to ADHD.

Just something to look into. But regardless, if you read some of the science that has been done on nicotine since the big tobacco settlement allowed science to study it without getting wrapped up into politics, nicotine is cited as increasing concentration in even normal adults. The issue is how much you need that.

I had a girlfriend last year with a heart condition. Even tiny amounts of nicotine would throw her hear rhythms off, so I quit snus for about a month. I was almost helpless. My work suffered dramatically, it was like I was going through life in a fog. The day we broke up, I returned to snus and it was literally like the fog lifted.

I have only become fully aware of my ADHD in the past 4 years. I smoked on and off since I was 9, and have now been able to trace my most significant difficulties in life with both school and work to the periods I wasn't smoking. I never intend to give nicotine up again.
