I have oily skin n and can dry shave with my de with no problems....

I prefer to shave right out of a hot shower with hot water and lather. It does make for a closer shave but I think it depends on the soap as well...fallow based seems to require hotter water imo.

..I have some cucumber soap I got in a puck from whole foods that was 99ยข and gives me a better, slicker lather than any other soap I have tried thus far...and I preferred fallow until this one.

I have yet to try Mitchells Wool Fat... I hear that is the end all be all of tallow based soaps. Gliceryn is just more in my price range.....cheap.

Congratulations on your "new" shaving set WickedKitchen. Once you find the right blade you are going to love using it. Monkey, I didnt think Whole Foods had anything for 99c but I will have to give that soap a try if they stock it here.

I've been using a Mach 3 ever since I started shaving. I've never even touched a straight razor. I'm worried I'd cut my face off.

It is the bulk ones they sell...some with the oatmeal flakes in them....I bought it a few months ago....but it was cheap!

It might have been a touch more but it came in a puck. I want to try the bulk chip off a block of soap from there but I have been happily using this puck.

I can see that this has it's advantages over my Mach3. I was cleaning out an older family members house and I came across this so I cleaned it up, bought some blades and soap and had at it. My skin burned like the dickens for a while after but I'll get used to that I suppose. Also, aftershave would probably help too but I like the closeness of it.
Congrats...you've popped your cherry! The razor burn could be caused by a few things; poor blade angle or poor lather. More times than not, poor blade angle is the culprit though, because even if you have less than favorable lather...you can get a decent shave if your blade angle is correct. It really takes some playing around to acheive proper blade angle. Go check out some of the Wikis on Badger & Blade, they discuss blade angle extensively. That site has helped me and thousands of others with learning how to weild a DE razor. I imagine the contours of our heads would make maintaining proper blade angle a challenge, but not impossible, because thousands and thousands of people use a DE to shave their heads. Congrats again bro, and good luck. Stick with it, and also..you may want to purchase a blade sampler pack. Finding the right blade for your razor and face is also a piece of the puzzle.

PM me your addy and I'll send you a few different ones to try ;-)

I would definitely give Rick your address. He has become a DE blade connesiour through trial and error and I bet you get some nice blades to try out. I would also be happy to send some out your way as well. It's strange but every blade and razor combination behaves differently.

I'm surmising that I'd probably want to mimic the angle of the Mach3. Sure the blade is different but I certainly haven't gotten it right yet. So I just bought blades from CVS and the soap was cheap. I was impressed that it was all made in America too. I learned that there's a shop called "The Art of Shaving" that's not far away and now I have a reason to go there. It seems that the DE system would be far cheaper than the Mach3s and aerosol creams. That's also a plus.

I found that shaving my head was easier than my face but that's probably due to the fact that my whiskers are pretty sturdy and my head hair is much softer to begin with. I'm going to have another go at it later this morning after I eat bacon. I also think that I need to make my lather better.

                    Art of Shaving=super pricey

Their after shave lotion is the bomb though.....but anything you can get there you can get on Amazon for half the price...

You can also get a 5 pack of razors at the Dollar Tree and just use bar soap to shave with.

Actually you can just buy a bottle of rubbing alcohol for less than $1.00 and use that. You will smell like a doctor and attract women.
