I joined up here as a bet from some fellows at another tobacco site. We were remarking about how a certain couple of members seem to attack newbies immediately, almost always without any other reason than "to keep things straight." Anyway, long story short, the bet was that one of us could join up here, voice an opinion about something, and then get attacked by a certain individual who has a propensity to attack new members who dare to speak their minds.

Definitely some wrong implications in the "top 3 posters" comment... Xobe is presumably off enjoying life away from a computer (while my GD job has me in front of one ALL day) and sage and lxskllr never fail to welcome people. And definitely a strange reason for joining. I just find it odd that snuson apparently has a reputation for "know-it-all" flamers, and the "top 3 posters" certainly don't fit that catagory. As sage admits, he calls people out, but when he thinks there are misrepresentations or whatever... not going to put words in his mouth, but it's definitely not those 3 I have seen being dicks around here. Not at all. Whatever the case... I don't know I'm just really surprised about the whole premise for joining the forum, but glad you like snus and you're staying for the snus. Those guys never fail to give sound advice and warm welcomes.

But honestly, do a poll here and ask how many people I have ever been even a bit nasty with, and at best, you might get 5 responses, and 3 of those are now my good friends (Chime in here Chad :wink: )

But there have literally been hundreds of folks I have helped out over the last year and a half. So I am a bit angered at some of the accusations being thrown around. But whatever, that's the internet I guess.

Sagedil, for all of the hundreds of people you've "helped out" since you've been here, how many have you "chased away" by being a dick?

I mean this in as nice a way as possible, but you're like Snuson's very own drinking game. Take a shot each time sage :
1. Berates a newbie for whatever reason
2. Gets into a political argument after he's sworn off arguing politics
3. Prefaces a statement with something along the lines of "I don't know how many hundreds of times I've said/posted/implied this" to someone with less than twenty posts who for some reason is supposed to know his backstory
4. After getting into an internet altercation, publicly "forgiving" his opponent and then implying that they are best friends
5. Backs up his argument with "I'm upset with the direction this board is going so I have to be the one to speak up"
6. Defends Northerner.Com no matter how outlandish the complaint against them is
7. Is just flat out pissy towards another member for whatever reason
8. During the course of his argument, subtly insults the other person while claiming that the other person "is making themself look bad by continuing to argue"
9. When discussing said argument in retrospect, arrogantly and erroneously implies that he was simply "correcting" the other person the whole time and the other party was taking offense to it
10. Without explicitly admitting to being a dick, implies that what he did and said during the argument was for "the good of Snuson".

Etc, etc, etc. The other two members I was alluding to are just as predictable, and reacted the way that we thought they would. (And for the record, neither of those other two are Xobeloot and lxskllr). If you'll notice, my eight or ninth post that transpired during the course of our argument, at the end I wrote something like "So did I win?" I wasn't talking to you. :wink:

So yeah, initially I came on here to exchange info about snus and experiment with some of you guys. If that's being a dick, it is what is. I wasn't even going to post what I did until I saw this thread, so it's not like I was trying to set anyone up for a public humiliation or anything. But like you are wont to say, sage, sometimes people need to get taken down a peg, and I hope you see where I was coming from on this. Nobody wants to be part of a forum that has a reputation for prickery. I hope we can eventually shake hands and you walk away with a more self conscious outlook regarding your behavior towards other members sometimes. If you look at the sagedil of 2008 compared to the sagedil of today, you're a whole lot more ornery than you used to be, and that shouldn't translate on a public forum.

To the folks that misunderstood me earlier, I was not implying that a large post count nor a long term history with snuson makes you a dick or a troll. I was making a point that once everyone stops coming here because of the assholishness, all you are going to be left with is a handful of assholes.

You know im kidding but honestly...here is my one cent on this whole affair...this guy did not come here with the same intention the rest of us did...and that was to talk about snus with people who enjoy snus...if he honestly thinks that there are certain people who are assholes and "flamers" to newbies than perhaps he can go back to his other tobacco forum where people are nicer and gentler. I just think he is saying things to incite responses...think of a child who screams to gain attention...not much substance in anything he has said but he is still getting extreme responses...oh well this is all just an opinion based on someone i will never meet and don't have to converse with on a day to day thing anyways and have no real idea what his intentions are...just saying what it sorta looks like.

Considering as how I am probably one of those grouped into the name calling bracket, I will put in my 2 cents. As far as forums go, I have only been a member of a couple of lists over the years. It was not until I joined this forum, that I began posting with such a wide variety of people. So, I guess I had become a bit spoiled in my expectations of the participants.
I am far from a tenured member of this site, so I guess my coming and goings would not matter much to people. I first joined because I needed input about snus. That, I got in spades. I think my mistake was wondering into the off-topic region of the sight. There, I found something I had only heard about, but had yet to experience on the web. Normally I would just let the lunatic fridge prattle on. However, when I read about folks questioning whether 911 was a conspiracy, I lost it. I kind of surprised myself with how much it pissed me off. I think it is the same sort of thing as I experience when someone goes after me. I generally consider the source and ignore it. It has always been different when they go after my friends or spouse. Well, some "Americans" were suggesting on an internationally read forum that other Americans would murder their fellow countrymen for some agenda. So, I snapped. The whole idea of it was so absurd, insulting and disturbing to me, that I lashed out.
I still do not regret doing it and would do it again. My only remorse is that I damaged my own reputation here as a result. I know others will no longer take me seriously since posting what I did. Oh well. I still read on to keep up to date.
You are probably wondering what is my point. Good question. I guess I am trying to explain that even those who call names are not necessarily immature assholes. I am just not used to being a member of a list that contains folks with views that are that detached from reality. Maybe my expectations are too high.
I do not know why, but somehow people like that just reduce my pleasure in reading all the other posts. It diminishes the site and its members in my eyes. There is a part of me that does not want to associate with those kind of people. If that sounds arrogant or elitist, I cannot help it. It is how I feel. However, I stay because this is just too good a source of information.

I stopped posting here, and only come around occasionally because of making the mistake of coming around the off-topic section and meeting some seriously disturbed individuals. My views and opinions may be just as equally skewed to them as theirs are to mine, but yah, there's some crazy shit that gets thrown around here. After that last episode I left here and didn't want to post at all anymore. The only thing I regret is that I let certain individuals piss me off so bad that I left.

It's not just older members that are guilty of being an asshole, there's just as many newer members that come around and start shit just to start it. This entire forum is much more negative than it was when I first joined, and sometimes it can be a real downer to read when everybody's busy pissing on each other in the snus forums. Save that shit for Off-Topic.

This is a snus forum, so I don't really see why it can't be fun and informative like it seemed when I first started here. I know this isn't a popular notion, but even though this is basically an unmoderated forum, it would be nice if a mod would at least kick the off topic chats out of the snus boards. If dumb shit quit sprouting up over in the non-Off Topic section maybe a lot of this negativity could be avoided.

One more thing I want to add is that having a strong opinion doesn't make you right, nor does it make you justified in being a douche to someone that doesn't agree with you. If that were the case then I would be always correct no matter what, because my opinions are pretty strong.

I don't think it even belongs there. Nobody on this board should be ranking on anyone else for anything. The Off-Topic, General Discussion, Lounge section, etc. of many message boards always seem to attract this kind of behavior; I had always hoped this board would stay above that.
