Federal tobacco tax hike goes into effect tomorrow

So how does it affect you? I know I can no longer afford my Camel non-filters as they've jumped from 42.00 a carton to over sixty bucks. On top of the federal tax, NC in its infinite wisdom elected Bev Perdue who is pretty freaking close to putting in a 1.00 a pack increase in cigarette tax. This is MADNESS!

For every tobacco user that elected Obama and to my fellow knucklehead North Carolinians that elected Bev Perdue, I owe you a swift kick to the testicles and an open invitation to pay the price difference in my tobacco products. Don't bitch, don't cry, don't try to defend your actions or the actions of the people you elected, just thrust your testicles outward and hand me your billfold.

And if you think that this doesn't affect you in the long run because you only use Swedish Snus, you need to make friends with google.

I'm notoriously apolitical, so this isn't a party issue. It's an idiot issue, and for some reason Americans love putting the stupidest/greediest/most evil candidate in office at the worst possible times. When the republicans are in office, I fear for my personal privacy and liberties. When the democrats are in office, I clutch my wallet and my firearms. Now I have to clutch my tobacco? **** politicians and anyone that thinks that they have the right to make money off of a hobby that they personally don't agree with. Sin tax, my ass- Boston Tea Party meeting at my house tomorrow night. Bring your guns, porn, tobacco, beer, and civil liberties.

      ....
I'm in Florida and our taxes are about the same.
      Florida $0.33.9 per pack
      North Carolina $0.35 per pack

With the increased taxes effective April 1st a carton of Malboro Reds is $34.00 (was $26) at the local Murphy Oil @ Walmart.

      Florida $34.00
      North Carolina $42.00- $60.00 ?????

      Someone is full of bullshit.

How the hell is anyone in the US getting butts for $34 a carton? Cartons have been $50-$60 up here in RI for a long time. I just quit, but was paying $7.25 a pack for American Spirits....

I noticed that cigarette prices did freaking go through the roof!

I used to smoke 2 packs a day and if I was still smoking I would be ****ed!

My wife quit just in time also. Her usual smokes went to over 5.50 a pack a few weeks back where I live.

            Rhode Island state tax $2.46/pack
            Florida state tax $0.339/pack

            $24.60 - $3.39 = $21.21 = the difference in taxes on a carton between RI & FL
            $21.21 + $34 = $54.21
So your $50-$60 is about right for RI

Before I started using snus, about 2 years ago, I could buy a pack of smokes in my somewhat large hometown for about 4.25. When I moved to a rural part of Missouri I was getting a pack of camels for 3.24 a pack after tax. But Missouri just raised cig taxes or something because now camels are a little over 5 dollars.

Sorry if you don't have county/municipality tax where you live, but where I live we do. It's gone up to match the proposed 1.00 a pack increase that is supposed to take effect in June. So, two months from now my Camels will be 72.39 if I've got my math right.

Someone is indeed full of bullshit. Our elected officials and the people that vote them into office.

                    and where would that be?

Forsyth County is talking about a resolution against the Govenor Perdue's prosposed state tax increase, not one of their own.

Just today a pack of Marlboro Lights cost $3.02, tomorrow the price will be $4.95! With increasing prices, I'm sure more and more people will look into alternatives and thanks to Marlboro & Camel, these people will discover snus which may ultimately lead them to Swedish snus which I think will lead to higher prices. So yup, I definitely believe this stupid tax hike is gonna end up screwing all of us, not just smokers. All I can say is that from my experience, I believe ex-smokers are some of the biggest anti-tobacco people around. Didn't Obama used to smoke??? I don't know what role he played, if any in this increase, but it wouldn't surprise me. I think my new signature is gonna be, "Obesity kills more than tobacco, tax Twinkies!"

But , millionaires like Obama( who still smokes according to some reports), and the politicians that voted for this increase are not affected. At least not the way us guys towards the bottom of the income range are getting it jammed to us. I mean these taxes are supposed to help the poor, right? Plus how many of the "95% of Americans" are getting hit with this tax increase?
Not even counting that the new cigar tax is higher percentage wise on Black and Milds than it is on the pols favorite (iilegal) Cuban stogies.

Damned right it does, so where's the tax on McDonald's french fries?? I love those things, but could give them up more easily than nicotine.

TBD...didn't you know that "big government" knows what's best for you and I and that by raising the taxes on things that THEY deem as harmful, is merely saving our lives. WTF...I hate people like that. How about I do what I want as long as it doesn't harm anyone else or break laws, and they do what they want as long as it doesn't harm me or break laws.

OH, and Al Gore invented the internet AND global warming!

Both of those required more brain power than I credit him with. He is just a follower, who is famous enough to get attention. Kinda like a lot of other politicians. Who would have thought in the early 80's that the peanut farmer would get a Nobel Prize?

Can someone else here from North Carolina besides me please point out to our Floridian friend that cigarettes have gone up over twenty dollars a carton in the last couple of weeks? I'm getting the impression that he thinks I'm making this up.
