A JAPANESE safety panel says radiation is 1000 times above normal at a nuclear plant in the country's northeast, Kyodo news agency reports.

Japan's Government has put the radiation level at the Fukushima plant eight times above normal and has stated that there is only "a possibility of a radioactive" leak from the reactor.
People within 10km (6 miles) of nuclear plant have been ordered to evacuate.

I've been to Fukushima Daiichi and it's a beautiful place.
I sincerely hope they can sort this out but I suspect there's going to be a disaster here. Is there a point of no return for heat in a nuclear reactor?

I have a feeling this is being seriously under reported or under valued to maybe just keep the calm. I mean they have to report enough, because people can see there is a problem, but they don't want widespread panic. Hope I'm wrong......

Yeah, I see this as a threat to our best source of renewable energy. Just as nuclear was coming back on the scene after 30+ years... Go figure...

I'm a fan of Nuclear energy, then again maybe not after this. maybe it is a little too tenuous.....

Even a full chernobyle style nuclear meltdown isn't as damaging to the environment or to human lives as the oil companies of today are. But people can see the immediate damage caused by nuclear energy, you can contain and weigh nuclear waste, it's not like the oil and coal industries that puff it into the air as particulate matter. You actually have to box up and haul off the waste from nuclear reactors and argue over where to bury it, unlike the waste from coal or petrolium.

Nuclear energy FTW. Actually we should be using thorium or something that isn't as unstable as what we are using today. We really should replace all nuclear reactors with thorium or some other medium that cannot be used for nuclear weapons either.*

*Only America gets to keep the nukes....

Off the cuff I agree. But if this thing goes cheyrnoble in Japan it will change my POV dramatically. Then again it is a relatively new technology that I am sure can be made super safer with the proper precautions. Barring craziness like this it is the CLEANEST energy that we know of. I don't know, I guess. I like clean coal as well, but there's no such thing. Natural gas is clean but doesn't quite put up the energy Nuke does. And eventually if we're not already not we will treat it like oil, which there is plenty of but at this point is vilified and manipulated.

Sadly but true, its looking like this going to happen. I pray that the Japanese people can survive the nuclear fallout and all the bad nasty things that are coming.

Yes the whole deal is sad, but understand how they have released information..... If this was happening in your town wouldn't you want to know shit straight forward, I would. Once you realize these people are just trying to save face and that is worth your death then you can do what you need to, to be safe......

I totally agree...I hate it when the government is "sugar-coating" the information they release. Honestly any meltdown is bad news. One meltdown can be dealt with, but two? The people of Japan need to know so they can prepare for the absolute worst. This is not going to end well what-so-ever.

The days of enriched uranium are over. We only used that particular isotope because it could be made into nuclear weapons quickly if we needed to. Thorium and some other kinds of reactors seem promising, and at least thorium is being used in some places but still in the beginning stages. Thorium reactors can't go Chernobyl and melt down like that and the enriched nuke cores can't be turned into bombs. I am no expert but I know there are other possibilities out there that will work, the idea behind nuclear power does not require us to use uranium at all, there is a whole host of energy sources both foreign and domestic that could be utilized, it's just that the people with money already have a profit machine set up and they don't want to switch to a new business while there is still oil in the ground. Don't expect much "green tech" until the oil starts getting low, which will be soon.
