Question regarding Northerner and back taxes

As for any state or federal entity collecting back tobacco taxes on you.... I highly doubt they are going to chase anyone down of what might amount to a few hundred dollars. The way our government is running now, it would cost more to collect your money than the amount of the tax.

I can see youve never visited california. They will pay 100k just to audit you to collect 100$.

Chad you are incorrect. You were supposed to pay taxes on it all along, pact just implements an enforcement component where now tobacco retailers have to give records of their transactions over to each state they do business in.


So if ca got ahold of my records, they may say i didnt pay back taxes. So i feel this is a legitimate concern as the rules didnt change because of pact, the rules were already there, its just that now they have a method of enforcing it. And knowing my state, they will enforce it to the fullest.

I'm sure a collective "F***!!!!!!!" was just said by all SnusOn members after reading this post.

Worth repeating, IMO:

The collection of sales tax is still of concern since it looks like Northerner and others are not, for the most part, collecting those taxes (just the Tobacco Tax). And these companies are now required to maintain the required databases.

Expect to receive some kind of notification from your state if sales tax was not collected prior to shipping.

Now if that doesn't look like conspiracy, I really dont know what does.

From what i gather the list on their website is gone but they still have ample records of who bought what, which is why they said they will still ship those items. This means they have records, and pact means states are obliged to request those records. The only thing lost was the list of shit you could view on their site, not the actual list of orders, which northerner claims is in tact.

I am good - I just went through paypal and labeled all my transactions "online tobacco purchase sgreger".

OK take a look at the state website and let me know how we are supposed to pay our taxes on there. From what I can see, there is a huge amount of paperwork involved to do this.

I don't know about Cali but in Taxachusetts (and, I imagine, most states) the fact that anything is a gift does not absolve you from paying the sales tax.

btw, it's not nice to gloat over others' potential misfortunes just 'cause you've had more than your share of BS...

Pact just says tobacco retailers are required to send paperwork to the state, paypal is not just a tobacco retailer and is therefore not obliged to give over all of their records. Especially those not labeled as being tobacco related. The state would have to go EXTRA out of their way to go through every transaction from paypal and decide which were tobacco related. Either way, paypal isnt required by law to report to the state like tobacco retailers now are.

I don't think they will spend the time and resources on reviewing pre-PACT orders, however it wouldn't surprise if for some reason PACT is struck down, that the gov't starts to aggressively enforce that "fine print" listed on all snus sites that it is the buyer's responsibility to pay local and state taxes on their purchase.
