I was at a street festival a few weeks ago in Chicago. There was a Camel tent, you had to show an ID to get in. They asked if I snused, I said yes, so they asked to see the can. I took it out and they scanned the bar code into the laptop they had there. The kids working the tent didn't seem to recognize it. It was Thuder frosted long+. They gave me a tin of Robust, and a free pack of smokes which I gave to a friend.

I remember liking the robust, but I was pretty drunk at the time, so I probably would have liked anything. Somehow by the next morning, the can was gone, not just empty, but gone. I think another friend took it, or maybe I lost it, who knows. I've been wanting to find another can so I can try it again.

I think this thread shows that we Americans really do want an American snus, that's is both good, and easily available.

Not even close. I kept reading this so I bought a roll of the Offroad Frosted. Figured I could really use some regular strength portions I could use. They taste nothing like Thunder Frosted. While I do not hate them, I can tolerate then, but to me, nothing at all like the taste of Thunder. They were a big fail for me.

This recent thread about the "New" Camel SNUS flavors, and people looking for them, including me, and not finding them, has led me to an interest to:

              Revisit Camel SNUS.

I walked to the corner gas station with the hopes of seeing the new Winterchill and Robust, but no, they were not there. But, they did have the older 2 kinds, Mellow and Frost. And maybe it was boredom, or just curiosity, because things change, and tastes change, but I decided to get one of each, and revisit them, since it really has been, I believe, over a year since I had them, as I was introduced to "snus" via the American Camel, as I believe many were.

Well, of course I didn't have any of the many coupons I have been mailed, which either went to the trash, or given away, so I had to pay for them.
The Frost was a 12 pouch trial can, and it was $1.85, the Mellow was regular, 15 pouches, at $2.68. So, total was $4.80.

Decided to try the Mellow first. Not being a big mint fan. Long portions. I had forgotten how long and tubular these are. Not a bad pouch design. Of course the tins are nice, and this store only had the old tin design. Best Before date on the Mellow is May 2011. The Frost was Sept 2010. Both were cool in their little fridge.

I popped in the Mellow. Not much taste right off, but snus usually has to build up a little for me to taste it. Since I started using Scandinavian snus exclusively, this is like a trip back in time, I had all but forgotten what it was like. Smell from the can is not unpleasant, kind of reminds me of sweet flavored coffee.

As another poster said, it doesn't seem as highly sweet as I remember it being, but maybe it hasn't hit yet. So far, it's not too bad.

Well, I'll keep it in and post an update later.

Revisiting this Mellow, isn't all that good. It does have a heavy sweetness. And some throat irritation. I do believe I am on the razors edge of totally quitting tobacco. But I guess I gotta get these remaining urges out of the way. Though I do wanna keep with occasional nasal snuff.

I'm glad to see someone else noticed this. I had the same experience with Wintergreen, Thunder is way better tasting than offroad. I didn't think nicotine would affect flavor, but maybe it does.

Edit: At lunch today, I plan to stop by the local tobacconist that carries General to see if they have the new Camel, and also to see what their inventory of real snus looks like...

I have a Frost in now. I think I like this more than the Mellow. Still makes a lot of mouth drool for me. Heavy sweet flavor, like the Mellow, but this is more like, what? spearmint? I'm 'bout done with it all.

I fell like I wasted $4 something, to satisfy this renewed interest.
I didn't like either one, and it's because of their overly heavy sweet flavor, and some throat irritation. Yeah, I figured as much, but it had been over a year since I had these, and wanted to try them again.

Now, my interest in Robust has greatly diminished.

Well, no new Camel at the local smoke shop. He said he could get it, but he doesn't see the demand for it. The Camel snus isn't selling nearly as well as the General, he tells me. His little General fridge was pretty well stocked, he had OP, White, Wintergreen, Mint, and Loose. I don't really need it, but I bought a can of WG and a can of loose to support his shop. The 2 cans with tax was $9.88.

Next time, I'll have to see if I can talk him into stocking some other brands. It's hard because I really don't plan on buying much from him, but it's good to hear that others are.

I want some pictures of the new portions, and perhaps the tobacco as well, to see if they are more moist than the previous formula.
