Why don't they tax the shit out of booze? Booze kills lots of folks? How about a 6 pack of Nat Light that costs $15.00?

I can't stand this planet. Why is everyone out to bleed you dry? I don't get it. Luckily I have about 300 can's of snus in my freezer. Don't know if it will last but I'm not paying $7 a can for the shit.

The reason is simple: governments want as much money as they can get, so they tend to tax goods most heavily for which demand is prices inelastic, meaning people are relatively insensitive to changes in price when deciding how much to buy. If the tax rate goes up by 30%, and as a result the amount purchased goes down by 10%, tax revenues increase by 20%.

In the state of Illinois the reason cited for high cigarette taxes is a state health ins. program for children. So it follows, if funding for health care comes from elsewhere, then no need for the high tobacco taxes. Right?

It's even more than that. It's about self-sufficiency and not having to depend on anyone else or any other corporations or government entity, to have the things you want or need.

It's hard to imagine people taking much of an interest in snus if all they can obtain is $7 cans of General. Without the variety, I suspect a lot of people will view snus as just another tobacco product, except now more expensive than mass market products, and switch back to their old tobacco product of choice.

Whether it is more expensive or not depends on usage. If one smokes two packs a day, which costs 8 bucks, as compared to a 7 buck tin of snus which lasts 3 days, it will still be cheaper to use snus than to smoke.

Hey! Some of us skip eating animals because we don't like killing them and the violence associated with it and not necessarily for health reasons. We have to shop in health food stores because they offer more options and I just love Trader Joes and Whole Foods. But believe me, I am not the picture of health.

As far as the gay thing goes. I am straight but not narrow and to each his own. I do think using the f word like LHB did is downright offensive and uncalled for. At a minimum, this world would be a much better place if that word was eliminated entirely. Just my two cents worth.

Although not a part of the coherent discussion at hand, music has little to do age and "time", and much more to do with taste and experience. Quite frankly there is little out there as good as old King Crimson.
