New to snus

Darkwing - I wrote to Swedish Match today regarding sales in Canada:

I’m writing to you to ask you to consider selling your products in Canada. There is no ban on snus here. American products such as Copenhagen and Skoal are sold openly here. I note that you have been test marketing your products in the USA, and I would like you to do the same in Canada. Imperial Tobacco, part owner of Skruf has been test marketing a snus product here since last summer, but there is a market for genuine Swedish snus in Canada.

Good The Cook now lets wait and see what they say. Kind of unusual that there site say's that Snus is illegal in Canada you would think they check before posting that. :?

Great, Cook. Perhaps we should all (we Canadians) write to them and ask the same. They could sell in specialty tobacco shops, I am sure.

They should be able to get it, I stop by a shop at the Orleans shopping centre this week, he had some of the sampler for Oliver Twist spitless "Pills", that's an experience I don't want to go through again, it was like chewing a cigar, good price though $1.00 for 6 packets of two pills. Maybe I should have ask them. :?

yeah those oliver twist tobacco bits are strange. I tried them several years ago, they're really rubbery and come undone if you chew on them. they also taste really smoky, like you said, having a cigar pill. but strangely enough i found myself ordering a tin of their citrus flavor.

well at the time i was using them, i was attending technical school in the air force (which is rather regimented and strict)...I was also a bigtime dip user. Of course I couldn't use dip in class so I picked up oliver twist at the local cigar shop.
They didn't make me spit anymore than snus makes me spit now. (which I still spit with but much less compared to dip) But I found myself chewing on them because they were just that, chewy...something to gnaw on, but they would come unraveled since they are basically tightly pressed little plugs of tobacco leaves. You can leave them just like snus to make them last longer of course. the tins they come in are cute and dinky too. on them they say 'chewing tobacco bits since 1805' and they are apparently from denmark.

they have them on northerner and buysnus.

Blackwidowman - I think you have chosen some good brands:

General loose - probably one of the best loose snus around
Roda lacket loose - seems to be enjoyed by many in this forum
Catch white licorice - don't know about this
Romeo & juliette - excellent taste, long lasting
Skruf portion - good nicotine hit from these

Now all you have to do is be patient for your order.

I have a bit of cool news, Cook and Blackwidowman. I dropped in to the Ottawa Cigar Emporium on Clarence in the Byward Market and had a chat with the clerk there today about smokeless tobacco and snus. He informs me that a representative from Imperial Tobacco came around and spoke to the boss and they will be stocking snus starting in January. He claims that they will be the originals from Sweden, stored in a fridge, and they will be one of 3 retail outlets in the region all starting at the same time. This was just a clerk and he knew little beyond that. I emailed the shop via their website to confirm. The site is www.ottawacigar.com. You might want to contact them as well, to show that there is at least a tiny market of 3 of us, to start. Good news if true, eh? Although the prices, with taxes and duties...

Woohoo! Can’t wait...I'm still waiting on my order. If Imperial Tobacco is in this then we would be getting Skruf and what ever subsidiary they have.

Snus

Thats all fine as long as the price stays reasonable. I get the 15g can of Skoal at 4.60$ in gas station and it cost me 7.00$ at the Cigar shop :shock:

I am sure that snus at a cigar shop like that will be considerably more expensive than ordering online, despite the lack of shipping costs. Snus sold here will have excise taxes and duties added to the price, plus gst pst.... The key, for me anyway, is the convenience of just popping in and buying, rather than ordering and wondering. My last snus order from Northerner took pver 4 weeks because customs got their hands on it, and charged me $16.95.

I received a response from Swedish Match today:

"Hi Douglas!
Sales of Swedish snus to Canada are not allowed.
According to the Canadian Tobacco Act, mail order sales to consumers in Canada are illegal.
Swedish Match does not sell Swedish snus to consumers living in Canada at this time due to Canadian packaging regulations. We are not aware of any exception to this law.

I did a bit of research on the Canada Tobacco Act, but I haven't found the full text of the Act. Maybe someone else can check that out.
