NYC votes to ban "flavored" snus!

    http://www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion...ZQHnOSO6cGVvAL

THE City Council this week voted 46-1 to ban many flavorings in a variety of tobacco products, and Mayor Bloomberg is likely to sign it into law. Speaker Christine Quinn justified it as an effort to protect children -- but the main effect will be to make it harder for adult smokers to quit.

The ban also covers many flavors of snus -- a smokeless, and thus far less harmful, tobacco.

Snus is a pouch of tobacco that goes between cheek and gum, delivering the nicotine that smokers crave without the harmful chemicals that come from burning and inhaling tobacco. The risk of oral cancer from smokeless tobacco is low -- far lower than the oral cancer risk from smoking cigarettes.

Posted already as "new york city stupidity" I believe, but I will say once more I don't think these bans will really deal with their problem at all.

I still don't understand what it bans. Mint and tobacco flavors are not banned, so all the Swedish Match snus in tobacco shops are OK. Camel's flavors will at least be argued that they are mint (frost) and tobacco (mellow). I guess we'll have to see how that plays out...

I think their secret slogan is "keep 'em smokin'".

This is a look to the future. The country has a history of following new yorks example concerning tobacco they were first to ban it in bars, in cars and cell phones while driving the rest of our nation followed suit there after. This blows f NYC

lololololol nyc continues to price their biggest moneymaker (tobacco) out of the market whilst banning it at the same time.

It's like in the past 3 years society as a whole has become a hell of a lot dumber. It's like we live in a world that has no understanding of economics.

I take it people who live in NY can still order the flavored tobacco?

Blame Rudy. In his zeal to "clean up" NYC, he went way overboard, and started killing some of the more dangerous fun things going on. But he was wildly popular for reducing crime, so his successors are following suit. They should know by now, they're just going to drive people to get it elsewhere and lose tax dollars they could have had.

Besides, how many flavoured snus are there that you couldn't live without? General might be out, but I'd be fine. You could only have Odens original line, still okay. You'd lose Catch and Mocca, which I've never bothered to try, as well as a bunch of Offroad. The only ones I might really miss are Göteborgs Rapé and Gotlandssnus products. I think I could survive with it if I had to get by in the city under this ignorant and ridiculous ban. And anywise, I'd just buy it off the internet unless I'd totally run out. With 76 cans in the fridge, and more coming in the near future, I don't see an issue at all for me.

I'm not surprised, from what i hear NYC is the worst place to be a smoker. you pay at least 10 bucks a pack of smokes. And you can't smoke anywhere inside! It makes sense that they would 'crack down' on other tobacco

OK, so someone has to explain this to me.

What, I won't be able to order certain snus if I live in NYC??? The city cops will open my mail and confiscate flavored snus?? I get stopped and arrested if a cop finds flavored snus on me??

                        LOL

All this could possible affect is what is able to be able to sold IN NYC. So I guess Discreet wouldn't be allowed to be sold in the corner store.

ALL this is some politician trying to feel good about themselves. Has almost NO impact on anything

Good for the good people of New York City.

It´s important to protect the children from the harms of tobacco.

semi off the subject....but similar stupidity issue. CA requiring CF lights and then realizing the mercury and subsequent disposal is worse the the almost negligible power they save.

Everyone wants an easy solution to problems that often don't even exist.

I'm gonna stop now before I really start ranting
