nicotine release from portions over time

I thought I'd post this topic here before hassling the Professionals.

IIRC, the lit indicates that a standard snus portion of 8 mg. nicotine releases about one "strong" cigarette's dosage of nicotine to the bloodstream within 40 minutes of popping -- about 1.1 mg. max. The rate of the release varies according to the portion wrapping, pH levels of the snus and the mouth, etc.

Now, I'm wondering -- does the portion stop there? I'm one of those who tends to hold on to a portion for as long as it's releasing flavor. Sometimes I don't spit it out for as long as two hours. (Yes, I like drip and play with the portion the whole time.) Am I continuing to get additional nic during the second hour? At what rate? Has any snus lab ever calculated the maximum dose of nicotine available from a standard portion in, say, a two-hour timeframe?

Everybody's subjective impressions and conjectures welcome! Thanks all...

With Thunder Frosted, which is my all day snus, I can keep a portion in for about 2 hours and have steady nicotine the whole time. I can't say that's because of how it's made, or the portion, I've only been on snus for about 6 months so I don't know the genetic makeup, but I can say on that one product that I use, I have steady nicotine the whole time I have the portion in.

I've always wondered the same thing. For me, 45-60 minutes is my average time for keeping in snus.

Claq Qui is my usual and it seems like I never crave nicotine as long as I have it in. Sometimes that is up to 2 hours, usually about one. I'm guessing the longer you keep it in the more nicotine you receive.

          papawinkle,

I think it works out something like this.

You'll get about 80% of the free nicotine in that first 40 minutes and 20 % over the rest of the two hours. You can keep it in longer but at ever decreasing levels. There is a maximum amount of nicotine that is available.

Nicotine comes in two forms protonated and unprotonated. Unprotonated nicotine is free nicotine that can be absorbed. Most of the nicotine will never be absorbed into the blood stream no matter how long you keep it in your mouth.

Justintempler -- The old Pareto Principle Works For Everything Principle works for me. And thanks for the reminder that not all the nicotine in a dose is "active" -- I was sort of like, "it says here 8 mgs. why ain't I pukin'?"

Lately i've been having CRAZY nic experiences.

The other day I had a General Wintergreen portion in for about 25 minutes and started driving. I got an INSANE buzz going, like one of those where you feel super light headed. Felt good though.

But yeah, lately i've been getting it regularly 40-50 minutes in. It's weird because I used to not get them at all, but since I've been using General Wintergreen regularly I get it alot.
