Sage's Retro Replacement Quest

I agree when you say that you can love a snus like N&J and then one day it will turn on you. General is the one that never has in over two years of constant use. I think General basically IS snus and almost everything else is a variation on it. To me it is not only the best snus but is the baseline on which all other snus must be judged.

So just some comments after today.

General White...interesting. I can already say I don't *like* it as much as Retro. Slightly stronger taste at first, maybe a bit of lemon in there, and a tad more bitter with use.

BUT...

I have used it all day, know I could easily use this if I must. And depending on how Grove white and LD white, plus another few regulars I wanna try, this very well *could* become a mainstay.

Will know more in a few days. I thought Phantom White would make it to the 2nd round until I had to finish the can. So I know that first day reactions don't mean much. Still, am grateful I am trying it, and comforted much more that I know I will always have access to at least a snus I find "acceptable" if the worst of our bad fears comes.

No matter what, I know I have found some things I can make work. Maybe have to rotate 5 instead of being able to just depend on Retro. And nothing yet that makes me as happy as Retro.

But if I have learned anything these past few years....things change. Crying about it s useless. Make peace with it, and just move on. Not always easy but what else can you do??

General White

Well folks, we have a winner. The first contender to move on to round 2!!


OK, so I never have been a big General fan. Have had this in the past, but for whatever reasons, it just didn't click??

So I am so excited and relieved to find a General snus, that I actually don't mind.

But to be clear, I don't like the General White as much as I like Retro White. For example, the two cans were opened at the same time. But I have 1 Retro left and 8 Generals left. So still grabbing the Retro more often.

BUT...

This wasn't about finding a snus I like as much as Retro. It is about finding a snus I can use as much, or almost as much as Retro without turning on me. And I think General *might* work. At least for now, it isn't that bad. Has a sharper initial taste than Retro. And citrus notes that I am just not normally a fan of ( Except in my beloved Nick & Johnny) But the flavors in the White, at lest, aren't over done. And so far, I am tolerating it very well.

So first, huge victory in finding a "worst case scenario" snus. One that I can buy tomorrow at a local place I hear. Of course, now that I posted that, given my luck these days, maybe General suddenly now decides to completely shake everything up, and dump it. Yeah, blame Sage now when General disappears. Oh, and you say it can never happen??? I have 2 words for that..... New Coke :wink:

Back on topic. So next for General White is a full on, overuse it for a couple of weeks test, as soon as I know I have money to buy more. Again, not as good as my beloved Retro. But it surprised me at how good it was at not being bad. Next I need to see if it can sustain that. Not easy. even camel White started to fade at the end for me. Started to develop a slight odd taste, that was bothering me more and more. I have a real narrow range of long term tolerance, I know. So see if General can keep it up

So Next......

LD White. First impression, first snus in right as I type right now??? OMG, why in the hell have I never had this before???? Why has no one ever told me, if I love Retro, you simply MUST try LD White?? Someone sure failed me. As on first tasting, this is a fantastic snus!!! Again, this is just my first reaction....know this means nothing probably. But I think I may have found a snus that is simply BETTER than Retro White.

Is that really possible??

Sage - Have you considered Knox? I hear good and bad about it, but that's the same with alot of snus.

I'm an old Knox fan. Was an early favorite. But now, where I am today, I just find the flavor "too much" Now if they ever made A Knox white, it would probably be my favorite. I do love the flavor of Knox, just wish there was less of it.

I used to love Knox too, when it was like $18/roll, what is buysnus charging now 27?, no longer the ultra low cost, It wasn't my favorite, but for the price it used to be, I would have had it a daily snus.

I am very excited for you. I recently tried LD original portions, and was extremely impressed. It seems LD dosen't get a lot of mention on snuson. I am glad I decided to throw a can in on my last order. I will be re-ordering.
