Rate My Snus

Following on from this post

I was thinking it would be great to set up a little website/database that consolidates all these post into a single place. Then people could find recommendations based on the snus they like or reviews on different types of snus. Kind-of-like a social network for snusers.

I got to thinking that would be a really good idea. So I started noodling around with the idea and got as far as building the basic skeleton of a site and layout. Have a look at http://ratemysnus.boldlygoingnowhere.org





It's far from finished, but if enough people are interested and willing to volunteer a little time to populate the site with snus varieties, reviews and ratings, it might be just the thing to help Snusers successfully pick new varieties of snus, and avoid the ones they won't like.

If I get a few willing volunteers I'll finish the user registration system and get them online with the system to populate it fully, and then I'll write the rating, reviewing and ranking algorithms.

Could be a winner!

I agree with Tom. It is unique, discreet, and damn shoulda been done a long, long time ago. So I, at least, too don't see anything not appropriate for posting about it here.

Are you volunteering to help me populate the list?

I basically need an excel file or csv that lists all the available kinds of snus. That will save me cutting and pasting from all the various snus shops.

Which means I will get the site finished more quickly!

So, in answer to your question, the Lös snus is waiting to be added by a community minded individual!

I've got two volunteers who've agreed to help me assemble lists of snus, which is going to greatly speed things up on two counts - 1. saving me time 2. Giving me the incentive to carry on with it.

Any thoughts comments and suggestions are always welcome - I'll post in this thread as we make progress.

I just wanted to apologize if my words of caution came across the wrong way, and for my smartass deletions.

I wasn't trying to be a downer...i think it's a great idea, and extremely well designed. I would gladly help out if i had more PC axcess...but my bandwith limit is only 5G a month.

I had just seen others get their asses chewed for promoting a startup site, and i didn' know it was limited to competing forums. I just didn' wanna see him get chewed for something innocent, so I just threw out a friendly word of caution.

Anyway I've learned something new, and I wish you all the luck in the world! I do believe you may have hit the jackpot here!

I think he's trying to design something a little more comprehensive, and dedicated strictly to rating and reviewing snus.

I've noticed with Northerner it can be kinda hit or miss sometimes.

What I'm really interested in is mapping preferences as you'll see from the OP and the explanation on site. if people regularly list their top and bottom 5 varieties, then I'll be able to map snuser preferences, so for example people who really like Odens ES may all dislike Skruf. With all these correlations mapped in the database, a new snuser can come onto the site and click "recommend-a-snus". It will ask him or her what varieties they like, and be able to reliably suggest other varieties they will like too. And ones to avoid.

Hopefully this should help minimize wastage by helping people buy the brands they like and avoid the ones they don't without having to try every variety.

The ratings and reviews are simply there because it doesn't make sense to not have them.

The site should also let people tag snus with keywords, and find varieties that are "fruity", "earthy", etc. As well as sort snus by strength, manufacturer, rating, ranking, number of reviews and so on.

If people regularly update their preferences, it might also yield some interesting information about trends in preferences over time too, plus maybe things like age-related preferences (do younger snusers prefer fruity snus, do established snusers prefer stronger snus).

Also, the site isn't going to have an interest in selling snus either.
