I'm really proud of my Senator. He is very pro-snus, and has spoken specifically on it:

The legislation would set tough standards for industry efforts to promote new products as lower risk. A company would have to show that new products not only reduced harm for current smokers, but also “benefit the health of the population as a whole, taking into account the impact on both users and nonusers of tobacco products.” The phrase encompasses nonsmokers and would-be quitters who might be tempted to try the new products rather than abstain.

Mr. Burr said that was a nearly impossible standard even for lower-risk products like snus, a packaged, powdered tobacco developed in Sweden that is placed under the lip, and dissolvable smokeless tobacco products like pellets and filmlike strips.

But Jeff Merkley, Democrat of Oregon, said in Senate debate that those products were intended to addict a new generation of children. He termed them “tobacco candy.”

Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, said, “The tobacco companies know that if they’re going to have 400,000 of their customers die each year, that they have to replace them with children.”

An alternative proposal filed by Mr. Burr and Kay Hagan, Democrat of North Carolina, would set up a tobacco office in the Department of Health and Human Services to promote cessation and “reduced harm” products.

Mr. Burr said Thursday evening that his alternative had about 45 supporters in the Senate. But the stricter F.D.A. bill had 58 co-sponsors.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/06/bu...acco.html?_r=1

Even that bitch Kay Hagan is on his side (and she is in no way pro-tobacco).

But, like Mr. Lucky posted above, the democrats vote against any sort of common sense amendments to the bill. I think that this should close all talks of this being bipartisan legislation, because it's clearly not.

I'm hoping some sort of miracle comes along a'la Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Deeds because Richard Burr seems to be the only voice of reason in this twisted senate. He has his supporters there but he's the only one being vocal about this.

So...what do you reckon is going to happen? Will it pass or will it fail?

so, i am kind of thinking here. isn't this classified as a food product over there where we get this from? i haven't read the whole bill, or this whole thread, just looking for a hole to crawl through. trust me, me kicking cigs, i wanna do it this way. hell, i am coughing up pieces of the past. i can't go back, and i hate the american stuff. this stuff is pasteurized. that is food to me. eh?

edit - i will go back and read this thread through. superdevil posted something positive, perhaps there is more positiveness somewhere in this bleak thread.

double edit - @SeneNatten, good post.

What kind of effect will this have on Canadians? I assume none at all, but I'm caught up in the hostility.

Please define mild degradation, if possible. Also, I would imagine that los is harder to preserve than portions (in the long term.) I don't have access to a deep freeze.

Mild degradation= some moisture loss, and flavor not quite what it was when new. Put it this way, my favorite snus is Gotland Gul Lös. I'd rather have 2 year old Gotland than anything else that's brand new. So it's not bad, just not the best it can be if that makes sense.

Honestly, yeah it's there but it is so minor that it doesn't interfere with your enjoyment at all. But I can tel the difference between a fresh can and a frozen year old can. For about 6 seconds. From there, it all seems the same to me.

Sounds like the effects of long-term freezing (a year) is nothing at all objectionable to either of you guys. I've yet to freeze any because I only keep a small supply on hand and order as needed. but I guess I'll start keeping and rotating a good stock. Slowly build up. Just in case. So many theories and interpretations floating around. My feeling is that snus will simply get a good bit more expensive, but not unobtainable. But who knows? So many variables.

Right now vodkaniac, that's exactly how I feel.

But build up a supply anyways. I can't tell you all the happy shivers I get when I open my freezer and see 60 - 80 cans of snus. Just a very happy.

I just loaded my new GE 5cu ft freezer, it did not give me shivers, it made think about what the heck to tell the wife when she points out that there is no more room in the freezer! At somewhere around a hundred cans, it becomes apparent that there is something wrong with my approach! But I will just have to wait and see!!

Yep, filling up our tiny freezer with swedish tobacco might cause some marital strife. Maybe if I do it s-l-o-w-l-y. Like the way Johnny Cash stole that cadillac - one piece at a time.
