EU Planning to re-allow the sales of snus in 2014 !

Sorry I might be a little slow on the uptake here but if big tobacco has bought into or bought out most of the Swedish snus manufacturers who or what is it that wants snus to remain banned? :-s

There's some confusion with names here. We have Camel and Marlboro snus-like product in the USA that aren't real snus. They aren't the same as the Swedish made/sold products you guys get over there.

I know, here in Europe most of the big tobacco companies make snus, the point I am making is that I cannot see that they would want to keep snus banned as it would hurt their bottom line, esp since it would be another product to add to their lines. People were saying that cigarette manufacturers wouldn't want that, however those same manufacturers make snus or have financial interests in companies that do. So why would they want to see if banned and their profits further decline? It doesn't make sense!

May be different over the pond, at least you can buy proper snus in places. RJ Reynolds is owned in part by JTI and SM work with PM to make the Swedish Marlboro snus, which is why I always think keeping the crappy american snus over the Swedish snus is a bit odd, as at the end of the day the same people own/make the stuff!

I stick by what I say. Snus works for giving up smoking, so who gets hurt with smaller profit, Big pharma, think NRT.

Yes, some American tobacco companies claim to make snus, you mention Philip Morris, don’t they make that rubbish called Marlboro and Camel snus, it’s not real Swedish snus, made the way people in Sweden have been making pasteurized snus since 1822, and don’t make cigarettes.

I’m not really sure how skoal and copenhagen fits in, maybe because it made by a tobacco company you bring the point up, yes it’s smokeless but it’s not snus. I think BAT makes Lucky Strike, and I also think Imperial make skruf and knox, but I could be wrong. I also think you’ll find that we have more companies making just snus, than we have tobacco companies making cigs and snus, but I could be wrong on that point.

Big tobacco companies that do not make real snus, are only interested in keeping smokers hooked on cigarettes, they want you to smoke, they love you smoking, and when you have smoking related diseases, big pharma steps in with drugs. Why on earth would they want a safe product on the market. Anyways, i could talk about it all day, but im off for a walk down the beach for half hour

The Altria group either own, in full, or have large stakes in almost every major tobacco company, all the ones I mentioned are owned, either fully or in part, by the Altria group. Swedish Match and Philip Morris International have a 50/50 joint venture making and selling snus around the world, noticeable in Russian with Parliament snus. PMI owns the name SM makes the snus, it is real swedish snus make by a swedish snus manufacturer the way snus should be made. JTI makes Camel snus and LD in Sweden that is real swedish snus, BAT make lucky strike and Imperial Skruf. GN makes snuff and cigars aswell as dam fine snus, Gotlands and V2 are the only ones I can think of that makes only snus and again I could be wrong there.

Even Altria have an interest and stake in Swedish Match. I cannot think of one major tobacco company that would not want snus legalised to enable it to make bigger profits, especially with the decline in smoking. I do not accept that a tobacco company would be in favour of an outright ban on smokeless given that, as the majoirty are under the Altria banner, it would hurt their bottom line.

The Swedish PM snus (eg Marlboro) is made by SM. The American version of this snus along with the American version of Camel are different beasts made in the US not to Swedish standards. F&L made Lucky Strike for BAT in Sweden. Imperial did buy the Swedish Skruf/Knox brand.

Snus would be taxed so I don't see that being an issue, also don;t forget that alot of the big tobacco companies make snus too (JTI, BAT, Imperial Tobacco etc) so it is very much in their interest to have the ban lifted so they can add another product to their lines, cigarette companies make snus too not just Swedish Match (who also make cigars and snuff!).

Also Altria owns Philip Morris, Gallagher, USSTC (skoal and Copenhagen), Imperial Tobacco and part of JTI, so the argument that its the tobacco companies paying off governments just doesn't wash with me, they stand to gain far more from a lifting of the ban than it remaining in place.

The ban on oral tobacco was based on, now old and outdated research, that happened to be commissioned by a pharmaceutical company iirc.
