I don't think dip is that bad, it's still way safer than smoking. I can't recommend it, or any tobacco though, unless you want to use it to quit smoking, because it is very habit forming. The main negative, I think is the spitting, but that's not so bad, especially if you are just chillin' at the comp or watchin tv. I don't care for fine cuts, or snuff cuts, so I'd say for a newbie, get long cut, and I don't like mint and wintergreen myself, so I'd say something like apple, which is good. I'd also say try some loose leaf chew, it's very good too.
Help, dip is tempting me

I was never a dipper but after using snus for a couple of years I did have major curiousity of USA dips and tried a whole bunch. Kodiak, Cannonball Plug, Camel natural fine cut and Redman straight are some of my favorites.
Although I do like a number of them I still prefer the Swedish processed flavor over the fire cured.

I came from smoking/dipping and I'd say fake it with los. Dip will hit hard with flavor but snus has a better staying power. I find that a little pinch of snus stays lipped for an hour or more where dip is in and out in 20-30 minutes. I just pinch/hillbilly los snus, hand baking is a hassle for me and I don't need a ice tool taking up real estate in my pocket. After 5 minutes you can play with los all you want and no mud slides.
Try dip out, you'll never know until you do. I'll be done with dip after my last two tins of skoal are gone.

Loose Leaf chew is like big tobacco leaves chopped/shredded a bit, but still big strandy hunks. It's super easy to use.
Plug is similar to loose leaf, but seems a little more shredded, but it's pressed into a hard brick, not super hard, but compressed.
Twist is like tobacco leaves twisted into a tight roll.
These are generally flavored in a variety of sweet like flavorings, but just a plain sweet mainly, though I think I saw an apple plug before, and I had one twist which didn't seem flavored at all. Some of the loose leaf pouches are flavored like apple, peach, Beechnut makes a wintergreen, etc.
It's really good, I think, even though it's usually just a basic sweet, I can't imagine anyone not thinking it's good tasting.
I think this is the disconnect with American tobacco users who try Swedish snus, because snus, compared to American tobacco, is bland. But, once one gets used to it, it has it's own different flavor style.
