    heartburn?

Im liking the snus so far. day 9. no smoking. only snus, seems to be doing the trick for me. But one problem i have been getting is constant heart burn and acid feeling. Anyone else ever get this. I think its the nicotine. Same thing happens to me, actually even worse when I use american dip like skoal or cope. thats like instant heart burn. Im not that concerned just take tums with it, but just was curious if any one else had this reaction.

Funny thing is I constantly got this when doing my 30year "former" copenhagen dip habit and didn't even swallow.

Now that I snus & swallow, don't get any heartburn.

    :?

I only get heartburn from camel snus, and double-barrelled General Mini Mints. Don't get it from a full size General Mint portion however.

yeah im always getting it with any kind of smokeless. Dip or snus. Its getting annoying now. Im scared that this shit might give me an ulcer or something. Any one have any ideas whatsoever why snus or dip is causing me heartburn? It feels like acid going up my throat. And i dont swallow any juice, I even rinse my mouth out when i take out a portion.

My heartburn went away when I quit smoking with snus. Everybody is different, but you might look at other factors.

maybe it's the type of snus you're using. Some starks will cause that. Also your body might just need to adjust to using snus.

I think its my mouth, I think nicotine can pass through my lips really fast for some reason. Maybe i have thin skin in that area no idea. I remember when i was using skoal. It literally burned my mouth so much it turned the outside of my mouth where i dipped red and irritated. that means it went like completely through my whole lip. Weird lol.

                  regards

I would get heartburn when I dipped really bad. It would even come up my throat- scary as hell. I went back to smoking because of it. My doctor said that I needed to quit nicotine and caffeine, but if I were to stubborn to quit then to take zinc and magnesium supplements. I took them every morning for three weeks before I felt any improvement but they worked for me.

I think the saliva has something to do with it.

When I used to dip I got heartburn wicked bad too. I learned that even though I spit my body though I was eating so it triggered my stomach to produce more acid. When nothing went into the stomach there became the problem. Without adding food/drink or saliva there was nothing to neutralize the acid thus resulting in the dreaded heartburn.

With snus you don't deprive your stomach of the saliva which will help the acid problem and i think that's way heartburn isn't a major issue w/ snus. Now you will be swallowing snus juice which in itself might cause sensitivity in some people. Sure, the nic can add to that but I think it's an acid imbalance more that anything else.

Beware of antacids though. These will add alkalinity to your stomach and increase nic absorption which might exacerbate the problem if it is in fact the nic that's bothering you.

My advice is to make sure you drink plenty of WATER on a regular basis. Try cow's milk as it coats the stomach lining (but would taste like shit w/ snus so drink it before). Cola will help ease the stomach discomfort too. Coffee is actually slightly alkaline so that wouldn't contribute to the acid problem but caffeine and nicotine have a strong synergistic effect on the stomach and intestines...Almost as good as massive amounts of fiber.

I really think you are on to something here. I'm gonna start calling you Doc. Seriously....

I do think the fiberglass shavings in copenhagen had something to do with my heartburn though. Just a wild guess.

I can't agree with that. When I used to get frequent heartburn coffee and cola were some of the biggest triggers and milk, while feeling great drinking it, would cause the heartburn to come back with a vengeance like 15 minutes later. You guys can take it however you want but I did the apple cider vinegar treatment and it I believe it actually cured whatever my problem was. For about two years now I have just gotten normal heartburn like once a week.

1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Sodium Bicarbonate dissolved in a glass of water will kill heartburn for an entire day. Cheaper than Tums too!

Nicotine (in any form - even transdermal patches) is proven to cause/exacerbate mild heartburn.

Other documented contributors are caffeine, alcohol, and diary. While dairy may have an initial soothing effect, as the fats/proteins break down, they make it worse.

In addition, foods with a high acid content - citrus, tomatoes (also have nicotine in them), etc...

Nicotine is also proven to aid digestion through stimulating the GI tract (same reason it can cause heartburn). After dinner smoke anyone?
