Bans on tobacco, chewed, smoked or snused.

I've looked into some of the older threads. And maybe it's even came up in some of the newer ones. There has been bans on smokers smoking in major public arenas. And now taxes have risen on ALL tobacco products. If you're one of the anti-smoking crusaders and you read this, I am here to tell you that you are playing with a double edged sword man. Be thankful for the aforementioned 'victories' and stop pushing the envelope. Pushing the issue to the point where people are disallowed jobs because of nicotine use may put a smile on your face but remember that you're basically opening the door for foolishness. The raising of taxes on a person's legal habits will NOT stop at tobacco. Legislators know they can run this stuff through for approval now and the time will come when it will branch out into other venues. I won't name those venues but they will leave tobacco in the dust soon. When the taxes imposed on tobacco no longer help their so called 'causes' they will go after others. I don't mean to sound like someone who's bitter because I'm not. I just always think 'long run'. Logically, this nazism(and that's exactly what it is) and brute force attempt to downgrade second hand smoke in public will come back to bite you guys in the rear. If not you, then your kids and grandkids will definitely suffer. Call me pessimist if you want to. I'll take it as a compliment. In short, when Big Gov't tires of hassling tobacco(and as hard as it is to believe they will....a dead horse is only fun so long even for the most imaginative of folks), they will hassle something else simply because of what it was allowed to do with tobacco in the first place. Everybody has a pleasure and everybody has a vice(Well, I guess except for about 5% of the world population *shrugs shoulders*). The do-gooders and nazi-minded well wishers have just put them all under attack without care for anyone's stance but there own.

P.S. The next tax is going to be on fast food. Watch what I tell you. 'Super Size Me' is only the beginning(this will cause absolute chaos). The fact that it was given a run in theatres and given some attention at the Oscars says that loud and clear. But here's the real clencher...people are suing fast food companies and winning. Much like they were/are suing Big Tobacco and winning. I see a pattern. Maybe it's always been this way and I'm too young. Maybe I'm just running off at the mouth and need to sit my butt down somewhere. Only time will tell. Sorry for ranting. Must be the alcohol in my system, which by the way, I don't think will ever fall under serious taxing due to the numerous public offenses(driving under the influence being main one) associated with it that carry fines. No need for taxing there. And oh boy! Fines for smoking! That's another kettle of fish altogether!

I haven't messed with the cigs in a few days(thanks thanks thanks to Snus) but I have always found the WAR ON TOBACCO to be such insanity (and this insanity could easily jump over to snus if we're not careful), much like the WAR ON CRIME and the absolutely bonkers WAR ON TERRORISM(only silly because it hasn't yielded anything other than a rebuilt Iraq(we're at the mercy of the media on this so how rebuilt it is....I'd like to hear from someone who's actually been in the field) and nary a WMD; never mind the fact that Bin Laden is completely absent from the media nowadays(not even a frickin' update on the kidney problems...no new vids?), which further fuels conspiracy theories that he never existed in the first place).

    Your thoughts?

Trying to improve one's own health is difficult enough. I have never understood how some people can find the time to care about others' health, especially the health of anonymous others.

And, tolerance seems an underappreciated virtue these days.

Finally, some of the health fascists do not seem to understand that all "vices" have benefits as well as costs -- otherwise they wouldn't be popular. Thus, they use the twisted logic of raising costs (i.e. bans and taxes) rather than improving the benefit-cost ratios by promoting satisfying but safer alternatives (snus, safe sex, etc.)

to expand on your well-stated points:

I hate the argument when people are defending their unhealthy habit and say "well why doesn't fast food get taxed? obesity is a problem". They are correct, but unfortunately things are going in that direction, so we can't add any fuel to that fire. Let's stick with freedom of choice.

What anti-tobacco people don't realize is that their taxing and regulating tobacco users into obvlivion hurts more people than second hand smoke ever did. It leaves tobacco users poor, which you can say is there fault. But they have friends, families and financial obligations that count on them. You are hurting everyone they know.

You ask where this puritan crusade will go next? fast food is just as likely as alcohol. There's legislation in the EU now to curb the effects of "secondary drinking". They are talking about getting a six-pack of beer to be the equivelant of over $20 dollars. The reasons they cite are things like "lost hours at work" for people calling out for hangovers, and "families adversely effected".

So now the nanny-state is turning into the fatherland. They don't only watch out for your health, they think they can take care of your family and make you go to work. I don't know where the insanity will end, I only know that it isn't going to unless we create similar groups to protect ourself. Tobacco users rights organization, anyone?

          Alcohol Bans will be next.

          Banning Alcohol at hotels
          Banning Alcohol at rental properties
Banning Alcohol at Airports and on flights
Banning Alcohol at Sporting Events/Music Events/Conventions

Alcohol even in the trunk of a car will be illegal with a child on board.
Intoxication in a bar will be illegal with random nightly police visits.

None of this stuff is B.S. it is all coming!

            snus

the world has turned into a crazy place thats for sure, i dont see the logic in raising prices anymore like he was saying. i can understand if cigs were like they were in canada they might be expensive, but at least the price pays for the healthcare of the smokers when they do have some illness related to smoking. its all free, mainly cuz the taxes collected are used for it. i cant believe north carolina is trying to put a ban on smoking everywhere, outside, in your car, etc.... that makes no sense im not a smoker anymore i could care less sure they stink but i tolerate em cuz i cant hate on someone for choosing what they wanna do with their lungs.

Today there is talk on taxes on sugar, soda, and sweets.

Tax is theft. "We'll tax you so you'll stop". Illegal price fluctuation.

I'm impressed, sofarsogood. You managed to pull Godwin's law in the first paragraph.
