I've never been a huge fan of Glenlivet. I like it, but there's other choices I prefer in it's price range. If the only malt they have in a bar's Glenlivet, I'll usually take Johnny Walker Black, or Chivas Regal instead.

They're all scotch, except for the 2 I listed as Irish.

You owe it to yourself to try a good scotch then. Try Dalmore 12yr. The price is very reasonable for the high quality. Drink it neat, or with a splash of water never ice. Ice dulls your tastebuds.

Around here "straight up" sometimes gets translated to "with ice" by the bartender O.o I send it back. Whisky's too expensive to drink it half ruined from the start. Also, bars that don't know any better will put those stupid pour spouts on the bottles. That works ok as long as the turnaround is fairly quick, but if people aren't buying it, the alcohol evaporates, and leaves the whisky flat. If it looks like the kind of joint that doesn't sell a lot of whisky, I'll get a cheaper blend so it's fresher.

                          I want to like Scotch

                          I try to like Scotch

I want to be refined, sitting in the oak paneled walls of the club talking stocks with the boys

                          But alas,

                          Scotch tastes like perfume
The club is pretentious and boring
The boys are dumb asses who have nothing of merit or interest to say

                          Give me a bourbon......and land
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

My current bottle's Highland Park. First one I've had. I had a bottle of Dalmore a few years ago; I think I may prefer it slightly. It's hard to say. I don't think either one is the "it" single malt I'm looking for. Of course, "it" is probably $200 a bottle.

The thing is, with Scotch you also get the land--well, the peat, anyway.

I like bourbon, but I can't drink too much of it. It doesn't sit well on my stomach. For value, I like Old Forrester. Delicious and cheap. On the pricier side I like Knob Creek and Blantons.
