Burton was awesome. Reason I started playing myself. I like watching slap and funk bassists for fun but it's the technical metal bassists that keep me practicing every night.

      Ryan Martine.

So hard to get a good video of his technique.

Man it's good to finally see some love for the bass.
Jaco was a crazy mofo. Amazing, but nuts. Burton was, like daruckis said, the best about Metallica. Claypool? Man Les Claypool is a cool cat.
Fun fact. At my old job this one dude always called me Claypool because I was the only bass player he knew. He'd always say, "What's going on Claypool?" I never tried to hide the smile on my face.

I had no appreciation for bass for years. When I was playing music, most of what I listened to had very boring bass parts. I couldn't believe anyone would voluntarily play one as an instrument. It sounded to me like an organic metronome :^D

A friend of mine that I worked with played bass, and really opened me up to what good bass could sound like. I had filtered out the bass in the past, focusing on the midrange, but he got me really listening to bass, and I could even see myself playing it. It's a lot more interesting when the player's interesting :^)

                Edit:
Here's my buddy's band, Cat Nights Begin. I've linked them before. He's a very talented player. Nothing really flashy like some of the stuff in this thread, but fun and interesting :^)

Almost everyone I know ranges from not caring about it to outright hatred for it, but I love old school 70's roots reggae music, one reason being that the bass plays lead instrument. I love the bass. When I have the money I can't wait to buy a big stand-up double bass. I took lessons many years ago and learned how to bow it -- it's the most physically-demanding instrument I can think of.

                    @ Wadetheblade

I would love to hear "Lazy Eye" by Silversun pickups played by Jean Baudin, he has the right sound for it.

Anyone know any good bass versions of this song?

Unexpect is some wild stuff. Lots going on there, I'm gonna need to download some 'cause my computer speakers can't handle it but I definitely need to listen to more.

                      Here's two of my favorites.

                      Alex Webster
                      His speed is legendary.

                      Geezer Butler
                      His groove is legendary

PS-you get to see the very beginning of the fat Ozzy era in this vid.

Is hat band called Frantic Disembowelment?? That was rad Mike. Too bad you couldn't really hear the bass part, just had to imagine it based on the riff and the visuals.

                          .
Im actually a lead guitarist, but it is so much easier to stay in the pocket and lay down a chunky groove when you have a precise, tight bottom end to rely on.

                            It's Cannibal Corpse.

There's not a great video I've found where you can hear the bass clearly. Hearing it live is the best way, he cuts through the mix better.

I might make a youtube vid of just me playing one of my new songs on bass. I've had the idea to, but just haven't, but I might.

You should do it. I like your music and would love to hear a new song especially If it's the solo project you are working on. I think I've only followed links to your full band.
