I gotta know the ranks of the other two involved. it would be weird if it were a major and 2 lower enlisted soldiers that plotted this.

There are unconfirmed reports that Major Hasan was a convert to Islam and originally from Virginia. He was reportedly scheduled to deploy to either Iraq or Afghanistan and was unhappy about it.

Well, religion or not, I don't think this was a terrorist act because you figure someone who was a sleeper than got all the way to Major would have pulled off a bigger stunt than just opening fire on some people. At least a bomb or something.

Really weird to hear of a Major being upset they are going to deploy and freaking out liek this. They don't do shit but stay inside the wire all day when deployed anyways..

Ironic: The guy was a PTSD phsychologist.
          EDIT:

And, MSNBC reporting shooter is a Virginia Tech alum.

He was promoted to major status in May, according to the Army Times.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, told Fox News that military sources informed her that the gunman was about to be deployed to Iraq.

Okay, seeing is as this guy was a psychologist, most of them come in as at least captain or Major, so this guy may be only 2 or so years into this.

If the other shooters were Muslims, or converts to it, then there might be some Islamic Terrorism connection. Being it wasn't just one lone nut, but more than one person, and seemingly planned, it may be a jihad. And yeah, white people convert to radical Islam too, though it does seem rarer.

MSNBC reports two suspects cleared/released but a new suspect arrested.
Still reports of a second shooter...

Shooter's cousin is on Fox, dude was NOT a convert, he was BORN AND RAISED muslim and was of middle eastern ancestry.

Not that this means anything but there is a lot of debate about it. Probably still just another disgruntled soldier.

   OMG, not MIDDLE EASTERN ANCESTRY!!!!

It makes me sick that there's a ton of debate about it. I have a Lebanese last name, eat grape leaves and kibbeh every holiday, and am a descendant of one of Lebanon's liberators from the Turks. My uncle used to tell me, "You're not Lebanese, you're Phoenician."

And I'm as American as greasy burgers and cold beer on race day.

Rumor as of now, Hassan is still alive. Wounded, but alive. Interesting!

Very sad story, though. Bad enough that they're dying overseas, but on a base here in the states? Terrible!

Well then your not aloud to use snus.

...but really the Phoenicians were sweet. Tyre, Carthage, the Punic wars, El/Baal/Astarte worship, the alphabet...

But I think there is some conflict between Phoenician and Arab Lebanese. I think the Phoenician Lebanese consider themselves to be Canaanite rather then Persian or Arab.

If Americans could even begin to understand the Persian/Arab divide, not to mention the Pashto/Dari linguistic implications for the cultural/tribal allegiances in Afghanistan, ..... wait what's this thread about? Probably not linguistics or what we ca learn from the cultural differences that divide and define our so-called enemies... I should take this to the Alcohol Thread.

I shouldn't have read this thread.

Like most people I think this is a terrible tragedy, especially coming so quickly after the shooting of the UK military personnel at the police training camp in Afghanistan

However, until all the facts are in it appears that there is nothing to link this senseless attack to his religion, but rather that he had lost the plot completely

                                http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8345944.stm

And CM, I have no desire to get into slagging match with you, but you can't be selectively racist against an entire religion. No more than you can selectively only hate one race.

You may hate the way that Islam has been distorted to suit the ends of a minority. Many others do too, including Muslims.

However to extrapolate from the actions of the few, and to include many law abiding citizens of the US (as well as Muslims serving in the US and United Kingdom military and police force) who quietly practice their beliefs in that statement is wrong.

If you are interested in the rise of Wahhabism (extreme form of Islam that the Taliban adheres to) and the distinction between that and mainstream Islam I would suggest reading Ahmed Rashid's books as they are some of the best on the subject
