It's a kind of wasp, but over here, that name is usually reserved for the paper wasp. They're the ones with a dangly rear legs, and build open combs in the corner of houses and things.

Just look at them! Only evil in their eyes! Pure hatred and resentment in their bodies!

Good idea! I use this stuff (shoots a stream 15 feet), but I've never tried holding a Bic lighter in front of it. Might make a great flamethrower. Maybe not on the eaves.

That yellow jacket looks like a standard wasp. Is there a difference?

Maybe they are the same thing. Wikipedia says, "Yellow jacket is the common name in North America for predatory wasps of the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula. Members of these genera are known simply as "wasps" in other English-speaking countries."

The wasps we have are larger and have a "droopy" appearance in flight. Here is a red wasp:

I've been swarmed by both - wasps and yellow jackets. Trust me, wasp stings hurt a hell of alot more then yellow jackets.

Just got back from Walmart and got my eyes checked, and two new pair of glasses; one of them sun to replace the ones I just lost. I'm now $368 poorer, and that was *after* the discount. That was more than I was expecting. Oh well, I hope they work out. I'm trying a different type of sunglass. They stick close to the face, and wrap around a bit. Never had that kind before, but they feel like they'll hold on better, and hopefully block out more of that bad ol' sol.
