I use whatever I have on hand. I have used 12 dollar a pound artisan locally roasted single bean coffees and I have used supermarket bargain brand. It is a better cup of coffee no matter which one you use.

My favorite is Ethiopian coffee followed by Sumatran. The berry flavor in the Ethiopian coffee really shines when cold brewed.

I rushed out and made some of this with some beans I had lying about yesterday. It's pretty good - but I've since learned about the 1:1 ground coffee to water ratio (volume not weight!). My first go was way too weak to dilute with anything. It was pretty nice though warmed up on it's own. Definitely a different flavour - no bang to it, nice and smooth! Must really have another go with the 1:1 proportions.

Sorry for the thread necrosis but I finally got around to doing this myself. It was awesome with awesome sauce.

Method, measured 1 cup of whole beans and ground them up very fine, much finer than I would usually for my french press.
Put them in french press, filled the press with chilled and filtered water (it holds 4 cups and I somewhat over filled it), stirred then covered with plastic wrap and set in fridge.
At one point I stirred it one more time...
16+ hours later pressed it (found it was sedement free enough to not require additional filtration) and stored in another container the resulting concentrate.

Concentrate then added in a 1 part concentrate 2 parts hot water stirred and enjoyed. Very good.

The toddy system looks neat but you have to wonder why it would cost more than most hot coffee makers.

i had never heard of this until i read it here. i am very interested and googled and read some info. anyone ever heard of a cold drip process? i saw some pics online that looked like that's what some do. its got me interested in making my own homemade system. i am wondering if it is possible and if it if anyone can give me some ideas to get started? i am baffled on how the actual filtering would need to be. it would seem cold coffee mixture would just clog it up. if i have to i will trial and error it but dang i want to try this cold brewed coffee soon haha

I drank my first cup of cold brew tonight. I put four cups of water and one cup of ground coffee together and waited 12 hours. Then I used cheese cloth and filtered about a third of a cup of the mix into a coffee cup with two thirds hot water and stirred it up. Pretty good stuff. I am gonna let the rest sit another 12 or so hours and try it again. i may let the rest sit another 12 hours and test again, and so on to see if it improves with time. I think tonight it needed to be stronger but i will see tomorrow. My first impression was i should have used more coffee but won't know until tomorrow. I used a dark roast Sumatran medium ground coffee.

Nice review. Keep us updated on that perfect brew time.

i am drinking my 24 hour cup now. I filtered it all out but am going to start another brew tonight. Its really good and for sure is better than the 12 hour brew. I still believe i used a little too much water. Tonight I plan to cut it to 3.5 cups water and 1 cup coffee. It's just a guess on my part but it would seem to make sense to use fine ground coffee for this. Seems like medium ground could be wasting coffee. I will have to test some of my ideas out as I go along.

The bitter taste is gone from this. I could see how some might even miss the bitter taste. It is so smooth its crazy. I like dark roast coffee. Most of the coffee my wife buys for herself taste like water to me. Sumatran is strong tasting no matter what roast i've ever had. With cold brew it keeps that dark roast taste I like but I can taste other taste too. Not just DARK taste. To me it is a little sweet which sounds funny saying that with dark roast but it is. I am not very good at describing undertone this and overtone that but there are absolutely some fine background taste. Taste that I never remember tasting in coffee.

I have never liked iced coffee but I am gonna try it with this stuff.

Oh yea, I told my business partner up in Canada about it. She said that her home coffee brewer will hot OR cold brew. She acted like I was a fool because I had never heard of cold brew. Of course, she eats slugs (snails) and talks like it is Canadian down home cooking.

Another after thought. It has a aroma and slight hint of some liqueur (no alcohol ha). It has been many years since I drank so its a memory aroma. Plus I can't put my finger on what liqueur it might be so I may be off base. But another way I could describe it is faint aroma and very faint taste hint of some sort of cooking extract.

Vanilla? A hot/cold brewing system is pure genius. I have heard that tea also tastes better brewed cold.

The problem with a fine grind is that it will be a lot harder to filter, either pieces will get through when you separate it or you will clog up your filtration system.

With a cold brew I would suggest getting a grinder and grinding the beans yourself, it will definitely lead to a fuller flavor if you use strong and good beans.

last night i took some decaf my wife had bought. hot brewed it taste so bad that she would not even drink it. so i figured i would use it for playing around with. I just made my first 12 hour cup of that sorry decaf. Its not close to as good as the first I made but cold brewed it don't have that nasty taste it did hot brewed. it's good enough to drink at 12 hours. Maybe 24 will make it better.

far as cold brewed tea goes..... we've been doing that down here in the south forever. Sometimes we call it sun tea but not always. Some people put the tea and water in a glass jug and set it outside in the sun. I worked in restaurant management growing up. By the book they would have you hot brew tea and then cut it with cold water. I changed it in my stores to cold brew and everyone loved it. Basically, i told the employees how much tea and water to use. Then they would put it in about a three gallon plastic container in the walk-in cooler. I can't remember for how long but probably overnight or little longer. Since the tea we used was in bags all they had to do was fish the bags out and the tea was ready.

One reason I did it was it cut down on labor cost haha. But we would have people come in just to buy tea from us. Of course the kind of tea you use makes a difference. You may know that in the south we drink a lot of iced tea. With iced tea there is no doubt cold brewed tea is better than hot brewed.

I grew up drinking hot tea at home but have since gave it up so not sure how that would turn out but I bet its good too.

I've never liked iced coffee but I plan to try it with some of this cold brew sooner or later.

I actually saw a bottle of cold brewed coffee at the store today. It looked like it was about 16 ounces and the label stated that it made 4 regular sized cups of coffee. I almost bought it but it was $7 for the bottle.
