    Mongolian/Tuvan Throat Singing

Anyone heard this before? I saw a guy do it in Mongolia and I've been interested ever since. I thought it was pretty much impossible until I started watching some online tutorials today. Check these dudes out, they are amazing. I've been trying it today and succeeding in getting some weak but surprising harmonic overtones.

This first one is a good introduction because this dude produces very loud and well-controlled harmonic overtones

I have a CD of Mongolian throat singing. I got hipped to it from this video...

I also have a CD of Tibetan throat singing, but I haven't listened to it in a long time.

Seems this unusual vocation gets around. Here's a slightly differing version practiced by Canada's Inuit. Good Video as it includes descriptive oration.

Asians in cold places seems to be the common thread.

... in flat, desolate lands where they find themselves alone a lot with some time to kill

Edit - I would argue that they could be unrelated though as Inuit throat singing lacks the harmonic overtones and is more about two people "stealing each other's breath" and telling stories with the focus on rhythm. Of course, the two styles could have just been separated by about 14,000 years and an ice bridge.

Nope, the Sami in Northern Norway, Sweden and Finland do it too. Also, for those that haven't heard them yet, Huun Huur Tu (I think that's right) is a Mongolian group that does a lot of albums with folk singing, and every once in a while they ever tour the US.

Intrigued by this and after listening to the first video I tried it.

I actually got some harmonics.....although very faint and uncontrolled.

Thank you for those videos....I'm gonna practice this and piss off my neighbors.

Nice Mike! Check out the tutorials by the bald German guy, he really helped me figure it out. After just one day of practice, I've been hitting some solid harmonics. This morning on my way to work, riding my Honda Ruckus, my jacket sleeve caught on my ipod headphones and I yanked it out of my pocket onto the freeway. It got run over by multiple cars. Having no music on the way home gave me a great opportunity to practice my throat singing into my helmet. I plan on doing it again tomorrow. I've unlocked the secret of throat singing!! I was almost ready to declare that one had to be Mongolian, Buriat, or Tuvan to do it. Now I know... I was cracking myself up today downtown. I watched all these tutorials online, then when I finally left the office I had to try it. I was looking around making sure nobody was too near, then as soon as I'd start up with some ill throat singing someone would come around the corner in front of me and be like wtf is whiteboy doing... ?. Then on my way home, throat singing into my helmet, I didn't realize how loud I was being until I pulled up next to cars with their windows open or someone on the street corner at a red light.... funny looks, funny shit. If my pregnant-ass girlfriend wasn't in the house I would have throat-sung myself horse by now.

I have been annoying the shit out of my coworkers with this. I showed them the first video and proceeded to try to replicate it all day. Awesome!

                              (I still suck at it)
