Its a bit comical if you think about it. You have one country in Africa like Somalia that has hoards of pirates raiding shipping out in the ocean and we can do very little about it. We sent some troops there but they were told not to attack the warlords who are causing the problems and we end up leaving after a helicopter gets shot down. Now, we have some oil rich country in Africa with a harsh dictator and we go in there full force. I am left wondering if some of these countries need a harsh dictator just to keep the people from killing themselves.

GoVegan - you're not far off the mark there. In fact you're right on the money.
Saddam Hussein - despite the fact he was a total bastard, held his country together. He knew that his country was full of psychos and therefore ruled with the fear of God. When we went in there in 2003 a pandoras box opened.

I suppose wars sort out the problem of what to do with your ageing missiles and ammunition.

I don't want to fight You!!!! But if You come to my house with a gun I think You might want to fight me. So be aware I will probably shoot at You possibly hitting You before You can shoot at me. There may be bullet holes in Your vehicle also.

What I was trying to say is You don;t have to come to my house and get shot. It is totally your call!!

We go places tending to other peoples business and get the hell shot out of us. Not neccessary.

                  +1

...my cousin has always talked about fleeing our country due to government oppression. Its starting to sound more and more logical. Don't get me wrong, I love America...but not this America we live in today.

We just can't seem to mind our own business. We still have a struggling economy, unemployment is still sky high, we take away any potential of federal aid to go back to school over marijuana, we STILL have hundreds of thousands of homeless people including children that go hungry everyday...yet we ALWAYS manage to find ourselves right in the middle of s**t.

We the American public hired (elected) everyone of those that rule. We the American public have either got to live with it, or figure out how to fix it.
Parties, special interest, have go go out the window. Somehow some way we have to for the most part clean the slate and start over.
I will listen to any suggestions on how we can get it done. We need to be here fixing us or they are going to come over here and fix us.

I forgot to remember, we are to lazy to do anything though, except send our military personnel off to get killed or maimed to fix somebody's problems elsewhere

Here is how we get it done. We greatly reduce the size of our federal government and allow states rights to prevail. The federal government should be there to ensure we have a strong national (not the worlds 911 system) defense along with some basic safety net programs like welfare and social security. They should also promote a strong infrastructure and keep up a viable highway and transportation system. They should also be there to serve as a way to protect states from infringing on individual rights. They should not be there worrying about menthol cigarettes, students test scores and if a state allows it's citizens to smoke pot.

Those are good results that could result, after we the public take action.

What I am asking is what are we going to do to get these results.?

The answer is Nothing. Because we can't even agree on the snus we like much less how to fix them taking everything away from us. All we are gonna do is bitch about it to those that don't care what we think.

We would be defeated before we even got started because we can't find a common ground to stand on.

Meanwhile they get richer and more powerful.

I wonder what would happen if the people of America rise up against our oppressive government? Would they just as easily kill us?

You Damn right they would. Look at all the preparations that have already been made to keep those in power in power.

We would be just like any other society that tried to take our lives back into our control. Many many lives would be spent. And we just are not willing to risk our lives to get it done for our own selves.
I expect they will be knocking on my door any minute if they thought I was a threat. Which we all know I am not. But it would shut me up now would it not.

More than 110 missiles fired at Libya

                              WASHINGTON, March 19 | Sat Mar 19, 2011 4:38pm EDT

WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) - U.S. and British ships and submarines fired more than 110 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Libyan targets to take out their air defenses, a senior U.S. military official said on Saturday.

Vice Admiral Bill Gortney, director of the U.S. military's Joint Staff, said no U.S. aircraft were flying over Libya at this time and no U.S. forces were on the ground. (Reporting by Missy Ryan and Phil Stewart)

The difference was that Saddam was not killing his citizens in mass at the time we invaded Iraq.
