I finally got my main rig online by setting up my router as a wireless client. The connection sucks, but it's enough to slowly transfer a bit of information. I got everything updated, and I'm now crushing work units with my folding clients. Running the gpu client knocks them out fast, and I want to get below 10,000th place before I shut it all down for warm weather :^)
Router As a Client

I have no idea what that means but....Congratulations!
Something about a computer...or a semi truck....and laundry?
J/K :-) If I ever get internet hooked up at the house I would start folding but everything I do online I can do on my phone and it is not really cost effective to have just internet as I do not believe in cable anymore.

I have been a computer nerd since the mid-70's and I'm not even sure what you mean by "setting up my router as a wireless client". Please elucidate. I think what you might mean is picking up the wireless signal from some other router and using it as your service provider? Like a wireless repeater?

Not exactly, that would be bridge mode. I'm using it just like a plug in wifi card, but I'm using the router. I have Tomato firmware on a Linksys WRT54GL, and it gives you more options than the standard firmware. I was hoping the signal would be good enough to game, but the latency's horrible. It works well enough to keep the machine updated, and to send/receive work units, so it beats a blank :^)Originally posted by ratcheer View PostI think what you might mean is picking up the wireless signal from some other router and using it as your service provider? Interesting. I updated my Netgear WNDR3300 to dd-wrt for the first time last week, so I could participate and learn about the IPv6 internet. You are right, it gave me tons more features.Originally posted by lxskllr View Post... I'm using it just like a plug in wifi card, but I'm using the router. Are you on the outside of it's range? You could be losing the signal, but you should be able to hook up without reentering your password. Poke around in your O/S settings to see if you can save it. Alternatively, your router could be overheating, and dropping you. Make sure the vents are unobstructed. If it feels hot(I don't know how hot is too hot), you could modify the case to give it better cooling.Originally posted by RobsanX View PostSometimes my wireless network stops working, so I have to put the password in again...

I really think you'd get a better transfer speed if you reroute the traffic through main engineering, and divert power away from everything except forward shields. and for gods sakes don't forget to open the secondary plasma vent. Cause you know that has a triple redundant bypass.Originally posted by lxskllr View PostI finally got my main rig online by setting up my router as a wireless client. Dude, you're talking out your ass. Everyone knows that opening the secondary plasma vent destabilizes the dilithium crystal containment field, and will cause transfer speeds to actually get into negative transfer territory :^SOriginally posted by AtreyuKun View PostI really think you'd get a better transfer speed if you reroute the traffic through main engineering, and divert power away from everything except forward shields. and for gods sakes don't forget to open the secondary plasma vent. I setup my router to get magic wifi. I had that computer hardwired, but haven't had internet in a few months. Since the O/S is 64bit, none of my USB adapters have drivers for it. Since I didn't have internet there, I couldn't fold on that machine, and that one's the real workhorse. I have the GPU(runs on newer graphics cards) client running, as well as the CPU client. The GPU client is the monster. It goes through work units like a knife through lös snus :^DOriginally posted by sgreger1 View PostSo what does that mean? Did you rig it up to somehow fold more or on a free connection or something? I'm not sure what a wireless client is.
I could have sneakernetted the work units back and forth, but that was more work than I wanted to put into it. The GPU work units are particularly time sensitive, and I don't want a full time job feeding the computer :^D
