By now I'm sure it's evident that I am very fond of pipe smoking. If not .. well, now you know.

As with most other tobacco products there is a trick to getting the most out of them. The perfect pinch for snuff, the perfect pris for snus, and so on. But WHEN you get it right and know how to get it right when you want to, you know you're hooked.

The pipe may seem a bit more complicated than other means of enjoying tobacco, but at the end of the day, it's really just lighting a fire and making sure it doesn't go out. In the process you get to dwell on past, present and future. unwind in a cloud of smoke.

snus is great, but it doesn't make me think about how mankind can benefit from recycled bottlecaps .. with the pipe however, peculiar befuddlements like that tend to appear .. it makes me wonder if it all is truly tobacco.

I agree, slartie, there's an opiate quality to it unlike that of other nic vehicles.

What I really find appealing about pipe smoking is that there is "ritual" to it, and that's something that I truly miss about smoking cigarettes. I'll never pick up a cigarette again, but I do miss them. Kinda like the whore you dated just for the sex, she was bad for you, but hey..it was a great piece of ass!

Thanks for all the great info, now I need to find some good tobacco. I've recently moved to a horrible part of the world, where there are no real tobacco shops. I'll check out the online stores. You've all recommended several so I'll just pick a few and try them. Thanks again, I'll keep ya posted on the progress.

I've never smoked a tobacco pipe but it sounds interesting. Can't say it's interesting enough to go out and spend hundreds of dollars just to try it out though. Are there any cheap pipes worth a shit available for purchase? If so, where?

Missouri Corn Cob pipes. Like $5 each and work great. They are true workhorses.

+1 on that. Corncob pipes are perfect for trying out pipe smoking and experimenting with new blends. They're really cheap, smoke cool, and don't hold tastes from different tobacco blends. If you want to try out pipe smoking for the first time I'd suggest getting one of those, and they're found in plenty of stores online and more than like a few tobacconists too.

If you find you really enjoy it then you can pick up a cheap $20-30 brier pipe online, or at a local tobacconist. I'll have to look around and post where to find some quality ones, but there's plenty out there.

+2 for Missouri Meershaum. There's a guy on eBay called "Aristocob" who sells them at reasonable prices with quick shipping. Or if you're lucky (like me), your local tobacconist will have at least the standard kind for sale. I find I prefer the MM cob pipes over ones that are far more expensive.

As for tobacco, there are good recommendations in this thread already. Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but if you pick up a tin of Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake, you'll have a very moderate, likable, quality tobacco to start with.

One simple pipe and a tin of tobacco that will last a long time = ~$20 with shipping. And then you have to report back with your opinions.

All this pipe talk really has me itching to get back into pipe smoking. I'm gonna try to go to the local tobacco shop tomorrow... the weathers getting nice, and an evening pipe on the porch sounds mighty fine right about now.

Yes. That to me is what it's all about.

I'm tempted to break out one of my pipes now... Maybe after these @#^#$!@# term papers are done. Then I can kick back with a textbook and review with a pipe during finals.

Has anyone here used a kiseru before? It's a Japanese style pipe for smoking tobacco with a particularly small bowl. I'm considering getting one for smoke breaks at work (we only get breaks if we smoke! unbelievable bullshit), as it should burn-up some tobacco within a few minutes.

I want to use it with regular Western pipe tobacco, as the Japanese stuff (koiko I think it's called) is far from readily available. I may be the web's guinea pig on this. This is what kiseru look like: http://www.lsando.com/pipes/kiseru/images/kiseruss3.jpg

And this site sells 'em in case anyone is interested: http://www.lsando.com/pipes/e/kiseru.htm

I always liked the look and craftsmanship behind Japanese made goods. Well, when it's quality made anyway, though I think that'd go for just about anything. There are some other pipes with small bowls, but if you're looking for go for it.

If you want a more European look that also has a small bowl check out churchwarden style pipes. They're known for long stems and relatively small bowls. The only downfall, if you consider this a downfall, is that they look like something strait out of Tolkien.
