    My Toque order is here!

I was pleased to find my Toque order in my PO Box when I checked it on my lunch hour. Thanks a bunch, Roderick -- love the super-fast shipping! I also appreciate that each tin was carefully nestled in its own little zip-lock baggie, in case of spillage en route. It's attention to little details like that which are the mark of companies with superior customer service.

I have only one disappointment -- and this is not really a complaint, more an expression of frustration -- and that's the tins literally reek of ammonia. I could smell it even before I opened the package. Of course, I have a much more sensitive nose than most, so that's probably part of it. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy to get super-fresh snuff. I'm just sorta aggravated that I can't sample all the flavors right away. Patience never has been a strong suit of mine.

I did sample the Cherry Menthol, as it seemed to be the least smelly (I think the menthol masked most of the ammonia), and was very pleased. Just the right amount of menthol to be refreshing, but not so much as to be overbearing. The cherry flavor is very faint at first, but gets a little stronger over time. If it had a little more cherry, it would be perfect IMO. But I've got cherry flavoring in the cabinet, so I can adjust it to suit my taste. Very easy to take, too.

I'm airing all 10 tins now, and thinking about putting them in one of those Fresh Extend baggies overnight. I've used that trick before with snus, and it works well to get the ammonia smell out faster. I'm looking forward to sampling the rest and sharing my impressions.

You are doomed I tell you, doomed! Plus your screen name may be getting a bit longer and a touch unwieldy.

As you have probably heard, ammonia is a sign of freshness, so you know it's fresh from the mill. Yes, just air it out a little if needed, but I wouldn't do it too much, because it might dry them out, and make them lose some of their aroma also. Personally, I never noticed, or was bothered with any ammonia.

Awesome you got it! I've read the smell is due to freshness oddly enough and you are doing right by airing them out a bit. I was expecting the ammonia smell when I got mine yesterday. I also like the individual zip locks for each tin. Hope you have fun trying out your sampler

          Exciting to hear, PipenSnus!

The freshness of ammonia never bothered me. It'll air out with each use of the can is the way I see it

Keep us updated with your take on the flavors, if you would.

Old news, bud. I've gotten that for decades from my Fundie relatives. Around the time I turned 16 I realized that all the fun people, and all the people I admired, weren't going to make it through the Pearly Gates, either.

I figure an overnight airing should do it, especially using the Fresh Extend baggie. They won't dry out in that short time, I'm sure. And even if they do, I've rehydrated tobacco before.

(added later) I stand corrected, Tom. I did a search on Snuffhouse.org and found a post where Roderick said definitely that airing Toque overnight is too long. I'll close the tins back up before bedtime. Pardon me for not heeding your advice at first.

Thanks, I'm sure I will. I've already got 10 more flavors picked out for the next order, although it may be a month or more before I place it.

Don't worry, I'm too much of a windbag to keep my opinions to myself.

I love the ammonia smell. I get it very strong from many snuffs and N&J snus. Just opening the can for the first time I have to drive my nose into it and breath deep. Mmm Mmm Mmm! I get it from Grov too but to a lesser degree. I, contrary to most wishes it would stay there but inevedibly I keep opening the can/tin. Huh. The good thing is with every pinch/portion I'm that much closer to opening a new tin/can again.

I suppose everyone is different, but I really don't understand how anyone can love the smell of ammonia. It's utterly revolting to me. Fortunately, the Fresh Extend baggie is working well.

Today I've been alternating between pinches of Original and Cherry Menthol. It's probably way too early to say for sure, but I suspect that SP's and menthols are going to be favorite snuff genres for me. Before too long, I'll post reviews of those 2 in the appropriate threads.

I'd think you would like the toasts as well. I believe there is less ammonia oder in them as well.

I think the only toasts I got in this order were the Bourbon and the Whisky & Honey. I've only had one pinch of each, and so far all I taste is the smoke flavoring. But I probably need more time to sample them.

Ammonia smell is good in certain snuffs like F.U.B.A.R Grunt to name one when it mixes in with the 'musky panties' odor. Seriously.

Just got 2 cans of De Voe Sweet Scotch Snuff, made by the United States Tobacco Co. in Nashville, Tennessee. Won them in an eBay auction for a very low bid. They're obviously vintage -- the entire can is tin, not just tin caps on a cardboard tube. But the snuff inside is remarkably well-preserved. Perhaps even improved by age.

This is the first American scotch I've sampled that has a real flavor to it. It's spicy with a hint of fruit flavor. Reminds me very much of Dutch apple pie. Not as harsh as Garrett Sweet or Red Seal, but still a nice nicotine hit. I don't know if the smoothness is the same as a new can, or if age has mellowed it, but this stuff is delicious!

I wasn't impressed with the new tin of DeVoe I tried; very plain. Do you have a link to the auction? I'd like to see the pics.
