The Dip Thread

I will sit down with the can of Copenhagen Black. I will see what I can identify in the aroma. Then, I will pour a glass of bourbon and try to compare them. I'll report back, later, as honestly as possible.

Ok, I did the comparison this morning. Before opening the bourbon, I closely smelled the open can of Copenhagen Black. I can definitely identify alcohol in the aroma. Because of the strong cured tobacco aroma, I could not specifically identify it as bourbon.

Then I made a very small pour (its only 9 AM, and I wasn't going to throw it out!) of Old Grand Dad 100-proof Bottled in Bond bourbon, which has been a standard of bourbon for decades and is highly regarded in my favorite bourbon forum (http://www.straightbourbon.com). I nosed it carefully as well. then, I went back to the Black. I will say that I can detect a faint similarity, but for me, the tobacco pretty much overrides any distinct bourbon aroma.

Then I drank the bourbon and finally took a good sized pinch of the Black. They definitely go well together. So, my test is a bit inconclusive, but I can go with the idea that Black is flavored with bourbon.

At least I don't feel as crazy now for detecting an alcohol smell in there.

I am wishing I got a can of Copen LC yesterday, instead of that horrid Longhorn NFC. I really cravin in. Maybe this Gen OP will satisfy.

The Longhorn Natural Fine Cut I had was terrible. Smelled and tasted like ashtray. It was moist, so I don't think it was too old. Could I have gotten a bad can? Maybe, but I don't think so. Though, thinking way back, I think I did have some Longhorn Natural Long Cut, and I think I liked it OK, but it was a while back.

I noticed lately that Grizzly makes Long-cut natural and Grizzly snuff but also Grizzly Fine cut natural. So don't know what can be the difference between FC and Snuff. I've still always disliked their products so that doesn't matter anyway...

The Grizzly Snuff from what I recall, was pretty good, and similar to Copen Snuff. Grizzly FC Nat was terrible, I thought I had a bad can, and the LC is OK, something about it I don't like, but it doable.

Picked up a can of Kayak Grape tonight.

Trying it for the first time now. Not bad, but not great.

Grape is an odd smell when you open a dip can.

I tried Grizzly longcut mint this past weekend. Never tried a mint dip before but it was similar in a way to the General blue mint flavor.
Not bad but a little too sweet for my tastes.

I guess that's what I love about the flavored dip ...... it's sweetness...... .pretty much like having a nice tobacco/flavored candy in your mouth . :^)

Have you ever tried any of the Red Man chews? If you like sweetness, you'll love them. Tastes like raisins and dates dipped in a bit of molasses and wrapped in tobacco!

Yeah I'd recommend trying redman at least once. I like it a fair amount but definitely prefer and strongly recommend beechnut-firecured over redman. I don't mind sweetness in tobacco but it can get old especially with dip. Stokers sounds good so that might be another option to try.

I guess I'll have to try these, the only chewing tobacco I've had is some apple pigtail ..

Can anyone recommend something ... so the redman's are great..

Northerner does have quite a list. Much better than my local tobacconist, that's for sure!

My favorite Red Man is Select. I've also had Silver, which is lighter on the sugar and is supposed to use mainly fruit sugars, but is also very good.

If you're not used to chews, you'll be surprised at the amount of juice it creates. It's an irritant, so if you have any gum problems or a sore throat, it'll make it that much worse.
