American Spirits were my brand of choice. I love the 'blacks', the one's made with that tobacco which is native to Louisiana? I forget what it's called but they are a little bit of heaven lx.. if you haven't tried them you definitely should. I used to live in a house which backed onto a tobacco farm in rural NC. Guess it got into my blood

The Perique blend. They are pretty good. Without consulting Wikipedia, I think Perique is made by fermenting the tobacco in oak barrels; maybe ex bourbon casks? I liked it as an occasional smoke, but it was a little heavy for all day use. I always bought their RYO tobacco. Back in the good old days, I could phone in an order, and get it in the mail in less than a week :^)

      Edit:
      Per Wikipedia...

The tobacco plants are manually kept suckerless and pruned to exactly 12 leaves through their early growth. In late June, when the leaves are a dark, rich green and the plants are 24-30 inches (600 to 750 mm) tall, the whole plant is harvested in the late evening and hung to dry in a sideless curing barn. Once the leaves have partially dried but are still supple (usually less than 2 weeks in the barn), any remaining dirt is removed and the leaves are moistened with water and stemmed by hand. The leaves are then rolled into "torquettes" of approximately 1 pound (450 g) and packed into hickory whiskey barrels. The tobacco is kept under pressure using oak blocks and massive screw jacks, forcing nearly all the air out of the still-moist leaves. Approximately once a month the pressure is released, and each of the torquettes is worked by hand to permit a little air back into the tobacco. After a year of this treatment, the perique is ready for consumption, although it may be kept fresh under pressure for many years. Extended exposure to air degrades the particular character of perique. The finished tobacco is dark brown, nearly black, very moist with a fruity, slightly vinegary aroma.[1

I called the 1800 number and they gave me another number for Swedish Match. I spoke to someone in customer service and she had no idea if the "Sale Only Allowed in the United States" meant that it was made different. I spoke to the supervisor and he seemed to be tripped up by the question and said it is FDA approved. Well FDA approval does not make me feel any better Newports are FDA approved. The only thing he would say is that it is pastuerized. If I want further information I need to send Swedish Match an E mail. I asked for the address and he did not have it. This is an issue of concern to me. Last night when I saw the US only label I wondered if that meant the snus was not made under the strict guidelines that are in place for snus produced for the Swedish market. Does anyone have any information anout this?

For sale in the US it probably doesn't have to follow Swedish guidelines but it might have to follow them to manufacture it in Sweden. If a plant opens up to manufacture snus in the US you can rest assured quality will drop/change. We don't have the same guidelines for oral tobacco. I think if there were to be regulations made that were up to the Swedish standard, and I well think they should, they would have to fess up about the reduced harm that this product contains.

I can't even see the short term loss of promoting snus as a RHTP. It's been proven that in long term there is a benefit to snus en mass. There would even be more money to be made...by all parties...even the government should they regulate and market snus properly. It's silly that our policy makers can't see these points. Maybe it's because of the belief of snus being tobacco and all is equally as bad...they'd have to restate that rhetoric.

My guess would be that an agreement between the manufacture and the US distributing arm precludes re-export in order to protect the market for distributors in other countries. It may also be to protect themselves from accusations that they are trying to skirt another country's tobacco regulations should these US cans end up somewhere else.
