    General Snus made in USA?

I read on another snus forum that a guy in California purchased a can of General Loose from a tobacco store. He flipped the can over and noticed that it said something about being made in New Jersey.

I just thought it was weird and felt the need to share. Do they have snus production in the states now?

Pretty sure it is made in Sweden. Swedish Match US is in NJ afaik. My fathers good friend works for them. It is most likely showing NJ as the US main distribution point.

I just looked at the bottom of one of my General tins purchased locally; it says that it is in fact manufactured in Sweden and distributed by General out of Norwood, NJ.

There is also a customer service number: 1-800-526-4653.......just in case anyone ever needs to use it for anything regarding the state-side snus.

Hmmm, if I ever get a bad can of General I'm calling that customer service number and complaining that my snus "tastes like New Jersey."

Northern NJ on the NY State line is lovely. lots of mountains, etc. Used to hike the Adirondak trail and camp all the time. Now if you said "Tastes like Newark Airport" I would have to aggree

Here you go, if you want to be sure! Made in Sweden still, just distributed by some folks in Jersey.

This is good news. Maybe if there is enough demand for it a local merchant could call up that number and order some?

Then comes the part about refrigeration.....

                        My can says

                        24 portions swedish snus
Sale only allowed in the United States (not sure what that's about)
                        100% premium imported tobacco
                        Net Wt. .9oz (24g)
Manufactured in Sweden and Distributed by
Swedish Match NA, Inc. Richmond Va23225 U.S.A

That's interesting that it's swedish match since the only other product with the SM label I can think of is Borkum Riff(Horrible thing to label as your creation imo) and I believe their machine made cigars. Their dip (redman, longhorn, t-wolf) chew(Redman), and other pipe tobacco is Pinkerton tobacco.

                          Maybe it's substandard.

No, just kidding, but that reminded me of my military service. In the small kitchen in the emplacement where I was serving there hung a calendar released by a feedingstuff producer, and one comrade once told that, while on kitchen duty, he had seen one bag of potatoes, labeled "only for livestock-feeding and the armed forces".

                          Cheers!

Personally I'd be a helluva lot happier if SM started using domestic tobacco. Don't they use tobacco from China?

I've seen Camel and Jakobssons snus made for the American market, and they're both labeled as having 100% foreign content, and for sale in the USA only. I first saw it on Camel, and thought it was marketing to imply a closer Swedish tradition. After seeing it on Jakobssons, I don't know. Maybe there's some obscure regulation they have to follow :^/

On the domestic tobacco thing... I don't know how it applies to snus, but American Spirit made a 100% domestic blend. I didn't like it as well as the world blend they carried. I will say I prefer my consumables to come from some other country than China. They can't even make safe drywall(!)
