200% TAX! Way to go Canada

So... A buddy and I who became snus fans in europe, ordered a batch together from snusbutiken.com. I've ordered from them many times in Poland and this was the first time in Canada. About 40 tins all together, today he gets a slip from Canada Post saying the package is ready. With shipping the package cost about $170 CAD, and now.. Canada post wants $300 CAD! for excise and taxes! So I called up the CSBA and they told me the PTT (provincial tobacco tax) is 18 cents per friggin gram! so there's a huge chunk, and of course Fed tax, provincial sales tax and excise ($50).

So yeah... 40 tins.. only $470... Thank God I'm flying back to Poland next week.

And some here wonder why we worry about this in the U.S. The politicians just want to get their greedy fingers on your money to pay for their pet projects...

Which is why you dont vote for osama.. or sorry.. obama. He has already declared that he has no interest in stopping pork barrel spending and has already insisted on increasing taxes. And dont be fooled by him saying he wants to lower taxes for the middle class income tax... but fails to include in that that he wishes to increase sales taxes and taxes on stuff like alcohol and tobacco so that he can keep the pork barrel spending on a roll.

Even if Mcain continues with the war in Iraq, at least he wants to make up for it by eliminating pork barrel spending, which nearly equals that of the costs in Iraq.

Lower taxes and lower bull carp government spending is the best way, more money in the pockets of all Americans, and far fewer multi-million dollar projects that present no good to anyone.

I agree with ya rollinred!! We're already feeling it here in Illinois when he was in the state government. But 200% tax in Canada? That's insane!!!

I know at the tobacco shop I go to when running extremely low on General is charging $5.25USD a tin. Thats around $1.50USD higher than BuySnus' per can price. When I talked to the owner about the price difference, he told me that he pays about $2.00 a tin, makes $1.25 and $2 goes to taxes. Seems to me that they are taxing it just like they tax dip.

Since Obama's core supporters are young Americans, the majority of which are non-smokers/tobacco users, he would probably get away with it.

Free trade my friends, free trade. Just think, when the rioters are busting windows at the next WTO meeting, they're busting windows for high snus prices, lol.

Canada's tobacco tax is absolutely insane. This is what happens when you socialise medicine - the health of every citizen becomes the financial liability of every other citizen, and then any act you take to damage your health is an act against the public coffers, for which you can "justifiably" be fined. Alcohol is the same. Both are absurdly expensive.

I remember postings here a couple of years ago regarding Tobacco taxes in Canada - sorry to hear they are still so high - they should exclude smokeless tobacco, like Snus.

Is Canadian taxes outrageous on Nicotine Gum and Patches as well?

Taxes on smokeless have soared in Canada over the past year - lobbying is going on to try to reintroduce some sanity.

The only way to get around it is to order small batches of no more than 5 tins at a time. Works for me. I pay at most $15 when I pick up the package at the post office. Most times, it just appears in my home mailbox with no duties or taxes. Depends whetehr they bother inspecting or not at Customs, I guess.

Why oh why doesn't somebody import the stuff and we can just amble down to a tobacconist and buy at the counter?

They exist already, but for cigarettes. It got so bad in the 90s that the government had to reduce taxes on tobacco because bootlegging was getting so bad. :?
