I think part of what has been so baffling for many of us about this whole thing is at its root cultural.

For me as an American….and a Southern American at that……when the government says you can’t buy whisky…..you crank up a still and make your own.

But it seems the Swedish language lacks the term “kiss my ass”.

Let a Southerner have a few moments in the Swedish Parliament and we would simply tell the EU, the US, and whoever else that cared to listen we would not enforce the imposed restrictions on the sales or manner of shipping regarding snus. You want to spend money policing snus…do it on your own dime……we will continue to allow Swedish post to carry our legal Swedish products and we will not enforce any of your penalties on our lawful merchants.

The EU is not going to lose Sweden over snus.

The EU cannot afford an embargo against Sweden……somebody has got to underwrite Greece, Spain, France, and whoever in the hell else is in the toilet

Ah... the good ol' days. I will admit though, it took MUCH longer to get it back then.

Haha too right mate, even in my country (Hong Kong) the cigarette price is like 50 HKD (approx 5 euro/6usd a pack and rising due to tobacco tax being raised each year). Whereas most snus I buy is like 3 euro (32 HKD or like 4ish usd) per tin. Gonna keep snusing because snus prices dont rise here, No PACT act or anything.

6 USD a pack!? Try $7-9 around here in Taxachusetts! I've read a single pack is $13+ in New York. Snus has saved my wallet a ton!

Wow, yeah I was in Massachusetts over summer on holiday and noticed that most of the cigarette brands were $7.70 and up, not to mention they contain that FSC bullshit. I feel bad for smokers that are exposed to that 'ethyl vinyl acetate' FSC ingredient.

I'm not sure about that whole legend thing................more like "graciously tolerated by the other members"

Anyway, Glad you decided to join and glad the Guide could be of some help!

While we are at it……..are you a native of Hong Kong or did life take you there? We have not had a lot of members who live in Asia so I’m glad to see snus finding its way to Hong Kong.

Also what is the snus situation there in HK? Do they sell it in shops...….is is popular….. or do you have to order on line?

Not sure how close you actually are to Atlanta itself, but it seems like there are a lot of shops in that area according to the General website (you have to register for an account to actually use the locator). More and more stores are starting to stock general products now. It's great. Print out the coupons on the site too and make copies (Coupons.com won't like it, but the stores will still take them. ).

Haha "graciously tolerated" I like that! Oh no I am ethnically an Italian which means life has taken me to HK. I used to live in China before this, dad's job. Yeah it seems snus is something of a rarity in Asia, I only have seen a few forum members from India and that's about it. As for the snus situation it is absolutely terrible! The only tobacco sold in shops here are cigars and cigarettes plus smokeless tobacco of any kind is almost never seen in HK, out of my 5 years living here I have never once seen a can of snus, a can of dip or someone spitting. I'm guessing there might be a few Indians in HK who use "Paan" (correct me if I'm wrong) which is sort of a betel nut and leaf mixed with tobacco that you chew on and spit the juices out but I myself have never seen any Paan users, plus that isn't sold in HK either so they would have to get it imported from India if anywhere. I have to order my snus online, buysnus.com has been kind to me so thats where I get my snus from. Interestingly enough, since no one knows about snus and I go to a tobacco-free school. Whenever I use it during my study periods I always get looks from people, most will think it is just candy, although there is one Swedish girl who goes to my school but I don't have classes with her and she has yet to see me snus in school. The upside is the school administrators cannot read Swedish so if they found me with it I could shrug and say "What? I'm just enjoying Swedish candy."

                            M,
Great post……………… thanks for giving us the scoop………………… It is always interesting to hear how snus is (or is not) doing in other places and cultures.

My guess is that as the medical info on snus becomes better know as well as its success as a harm reduction option especially for smokers....that it will begin to make wider inroads into other places like HK.

I also suspect that big tobacco will do all they can to detour that road

Anyway, thanks for the insights. I hope you will stick around and join in the wackiness that is snuson…………you can be our voice from the east

I am only paying about $1 more a can from before PACT from buysnus.com. I just make sure to order maximum wieght per shipping price so I get the most out of the shipping $$$. But I only pay abou $ a can including shipping. Thats not too bad.

No problem Snusdog looking forward to being an active member of SnusOn, I absolutely love the eccentricity of this forum, I feel so welcome and at home here. "voice from the east" man I wish that could be my title under my name haha. I'll keep you guys posted in terms of whats new around here. Hopefully I'll run into snus users when I'm out and about, it is not uncommon for Swedish tourists to frequent here, so I'll keep my eyes peeled.
