My first pris was a disaster due to the size as well, Once I adjusted the size, its been smooth pris'n since.
@zanaspus- I usually thro the prilla in my mouth and roll it over with my tongue and slide it in place with my tongue, Essentially doing what you do(wetting it) but without the soda.

A trick that I have found in my utter noobiness to avoid mudslides; Once you place the pris, take a swig of your beverage of choice at the time and let it "wash over" the pris. I know, this would be seen as blasphemy in Sweden where drip is a bad thing, but the thing will not slide once this is done (and I often keep them in for 2-3 hours).

I just got my bla and ettan los. Frst time ever. The first 3 prillas were disasterous, as I made them way to large. I had tried starting with the prismaster but that is still a huge lump of baccy that slid all over. I found if I keep the prilla smal and circular and still alittle loose it fits nicely in a pocket just to the right of the frenulum and its no fuss at all. I'm betting that 90% of people starting los make this huge prilla mistake. After I downsized to a bit smaller than a portion, loosened up the prilla, found the right spot, and quit messing with it, it feels good, gets a good drip going and I love it.
Mind you this is only my 4th prilla, the first that has really worked well but I'm at about an hour with no issues as of yet!

this is true. i have noticed that a very compressed pris will fracture in the middle. the only advise i can give you is what everyone else has said, which is just to keep your tongue away from it. i also find that packing it closer to the center will keep it from getting too wet and protects it from disintegration. mine are usually packed so that the edge of the pris closer to the center is just barely touching the side of the front tooth. i cant explain it, so here is a drawing.Originally posted by MojoQuestor View PostMy experience, not necessarily with any one particular: I'd handbake, and compress too much, and the pris would fracture. A couple of times after I got my icetool, I'd monster it, and the resulting cake would be tightly compressed, sure enough, but there would be a fault line where the pris had split in half. The whole thing about diamonds and other crystals fracturing along a fault line comes to mind. Seems to me there's an optimal pressure point for any given lös, and it is not necessarily (or even usually) "as much as possible".

If however I bake using the least amount of pressure just enough to hold the portion together then that prilla will hold in my mount 2 to 3 hours.

This thread came along way before the dipper's guide to snus. But on the guide we deal with a lot of the same issues concerning los snus. You may find it helpful to check it out. Here is the link:
http://www.snuson.com/viewtopic.php?t=4014
For now I think there are 4 points that may be of help:
The first is the firmness of the bake. The firmer the bake the less likely a slide is going to occur.
Second, is the placement of the pris. The further back in the mouth you place it the more saliva and thus the more likelihood of a slide
Third, is the grind. While a finely ground snus is easier to bake it will go to mud more quickly. Try Skruf, Knox or one of the phantom brothers to start out with. These are easy to bake but coarse enough to hold together.
The final point is probably the one of the most overlooked tips on preventing slides. As you begin with los it is important to give your lip time to adjust to having a pris under it. Until then your lip will want to push it out. In turn, your tongue will want to fiddle with it and push it back up. The result is more saliva and more breakage = mudslide. Thus once you get the pris in, leave it there and don’t touch it until it settles (i.e. molds a bit to your gum line). After this play with all you want.
In the meantime give your lip about 2-3 weeks to adjust (depending on how often you use los). Once your lip adjusts, everything gets a whole lot easier and slides will become much less frequent.
Hope this helps

Guest repliedI'm far from a los expert but what I've found if you're using the icetool is to squeeze hard - push the tobacco back in on itself again at the open end - squeeze hard and repeat. This technique enables me to keep one in for at least an hour without a mudslide.

Pack it until its decent so it wont fall appart when you put it up, then push on it with your lip, ive had skruf's in for 2 hours no problem when i used this technique

Yes, both can make small portions. The Icetool can probably make the smallest, but you can alter the amount of tobacco in either. The 3ml Icetool is about the size of a small pea around, so all you need to do is decide what thickness you like. The Prismaster is more of an oval shape, so it makes a wider pris.Originally posted by snupyI am sitting here with my first ever hand baked pris in. It's Roda Lacket, which is essentially like play-do. I need really tiny pris. This one is somewhere between a BB and a small pea, but closer to a pea. Can either of the prismaster or icetool make itty bitty pris?

Well before my latest order came in with Skruf Stark Los, I ripped open a bag of General to try Los. Tried and failed. I initially thought that the Snus in portions were finer grained, but I guess I was wrong, its the same. Tried making a pris twice, and failed. The stuff just doesn't stay together. If it starts to, I end up breaking it putting it in. I'm going to try the "old school" way mentioned above next.
Really have to say that I prefer portioned snus (white to be exact). Los seems to be smoother, but the cons are greater than the benefits to me.

I don't even bake loose snus that much. I just pack it against the inside edge of the can and throw it in my upper lip. This causes juices and nicotine to be released faster. This method is the old school way of doing it, but I prefer it since my lip doesn't bulge. As well, the snus will conform to the shape of your gums and won't stick onto your teeth as much.
