Can Unopened Snus Go "Bad" as in Moldy?

I found an old can of Probe in the back of the fridge that I had completely forgotten about. It might be 8 or 9 months old or something, and the cardboard container was all wet and decaying...

... so I put the contents into an 1847 tin that I've kept around (not big on the 1847, but it's a great tin), and am currently enjoying a Probe pris. It still seems OK, although not quite as flavorsomely sweet as Probe usually is.

Here's my question: I don't mind the idea of old snus in the stale sense, but if it "turns" like green cheese or something, that would freak me out a little bit. So what do you folks think? Can snus go bad so as to become bacteria-laden and toxic?

I imagine anything can go bad under the right conditions. I haven't seen it with snus yet, and I've used tins that were opened, and in my fridge for over a year. When Drum rolling tobacco first made it back to the USA distributed by Republic tobacco I got a moldy pouch. It was covered in white fuzz, and tasted musty. I ended up returning it and getting some American Spirit. The Republic Drum sucked anyway. It wasn't anywhere close to what it was with Douwe Egberts running the show.

Anyway, I think there's too much salt in snus to grow much, but there's always something that thrives in inhospitable climes, so never say never ;^)

Thanks, man, for the answer. That's sort of how I was speculating, too. While it's always possible, I'm not going to worry about bad snus unless I can clearly see or smell something that obviously doesn't belong there.

Oh and you're quite right about the Drum. I remember hearing at the time that Douwe Egberts got out of the US market because of all the anti-tobacco hysteria here, and when the new Drum arrived it was very much inferior.

Drum had been my weapon of choice for a number of years back then... I always rolled my own.

Good question Asquar. I've often wondered this myself.

I have tins in the fridge that are over a year old  The whites seem to have an indefinite shelf life. Los and regulars need a slight bit of moisture if you have not used them in a long time. I often add some Grand Marnier to my los that gets to dry and a mist of water to the regulars.

I agree with lxskllr in that "there's too much salt in snus to grow much of anything, but there's always something that thrives in inhospitable climes, so never say never ;^)"

I have had snus over a year old. No mold, not "bad" in that sense. Just very dry. Not the most pleasing, but useable

I've tried to learn to like the whites for that very reason, but I really much prefer los or regular stark portions. I just sent in for a roll of my beloved N&J, and threw in a couple of Skruf Whites just to try them, as I've liked every Skruf product I've tried so far.

The so-called purified Wise, or Oomph is supposed to be virtually nonperishable, and that appeals to me. But I didn't care for it at all. It seemed artificial...

Probe is bad right from the second those machines crap it out into the tins. :P

Just yanking ya....I've never seen or heard of snus going bad like that. It would most likely dry into dust long before anything else happened.

I was going through my tin collection the other day to make sure there weren't any old portions I had inadvertently left in the used portion compartments (gross, I know), and there were a few los tins I hadn't cleaned very well. It basically looked like someone had crushed up cigarette tobacco in them. They all still smelled fine.
