    Snus perception in Scandinavia

    Hi all,

Apologies if this has been discussed before - I couldn't find anything.

I'm wondering how snus is seen is Sweden/Norway. Over here (and I assume everywhere else) different brands of cigarettes are seen very differently. Roll-ups are associated with certain types of people, B&H are for builders, Marlboro Lights for students and women, Royals for scallies and so on. Is there something similar with snus? Is los seen as more 'manly'? Are certain brands associated with certain classes or types of people?

I think General has about a 70% market share in Sweden. So most folks, that is what they use. And I read that far more men use los there then women.

Until portions were invented about 20 some years ago, snus was a dyeing art in Sweden. The emergence of portions brought many, many MANY folks back into the fold. Over the past 10 years, snus has overtaken cigarettes as the nicotine of choice in Sweden.

          1. Scallie 42 up, 20 down
The lowest form of the british youth culture. The males define themselves through sports outfits and stupid caps (the burberry cap being the most respected one, as it looks most stupid!). The females simply look like whatever the latest Christina Aguillera style might be (slutty basically).
They both appreciate bad music, be it cheap techno, low quality rap or just "whatever is on the radio". They prefer simple movies as they never quite understand the plot of the complicated ones anyway.

Other descriptions include Chavs, Neds, Townies, Kevs, Charvers, Steeks, Spides, Bazzas, Yarcos, Ratboys, Kappa Slappers, Skangers, Janners, Stigs...

          1. **** no! The stupied scallies downstairs are completely stoned again and turned their horrible garage techno to full volume again!

          2. You goddamn scallie! Get a job!

Here in norway, it's general and ettan loose for the "hillbillies" and "rånere", which is the people ragging around in their cars all night, and mostly anyone who has snused for a while.
Catch and mocca for the people with rich fathers.
The rest is really what most new snusers use, most people end up marrying the General. :P

Very interesting. So most of the brands we see on Northerner or getsnus are not hugely popular in Norway/Sweden?

Everybody's fighting for the share Swedish Match doesn't own. I remember a press release from F&L stating they were the second largest snus maker, and were pleased to have a 6% share of the market :^D

Other companies(and Swedish Match as well) try different brands, but everybody uses General over there. I wish people would branch out and try new things, as I don't think General is even best of class.

Wow. That's very different to the situation with cigarettes over here, and the USA as far as I can tell. F&L are a company not a brand, right? So that 6% is over all their brands? Wow. Just wow.

Yea, F&L's snus division has since been bought by BAT. They already made BAT's snus, but now it's under BAT's control.

All tobacco production was taken over by the state in the early 20th century. It reverted to private control in the 60s, with Swedish Match getting all of the snus production. They were granted a defacto monopoly, and the other companies have been playing catch up ever since. It would be like one cigarette company owning Marlboro, Camel, Salem, Newport, and Kool, and the rest of the companies have the other more recent brands. American Spirits are superior to the major players, but they don't have the history to back them up.

Do you know a site where I could find a list of which company makes which snus brand?

                          Jim,

Here are a few of the makers

                          www.swedishmatch.com
                          www.v2tobacco.com

I'm sure others with more knowledge could give you some of the others.

Not offhand. You could go through retailers descriptions and see most of them though. There aren't too many makers out there.

Gallaher House now owned by JTI

Skruf owned by somebody, but made in independent facilities AFAIK

                            V2

                            Swedish Match

                            Gotland snus

                            Taboca-AS

                            BAT

Orlik Not likely to find outside of Scandinavia

                            Rebel I suspect it's made by V2

SnusAB I'm not sure if these guys are still around. They make some American snus', but I have seen any in the online shops in awhile.

Viking Snus From Thailand I believe. I've never seen their products.

Gellivare- A very small independent getting ready to start up again. YAY!!

That's all I can think of ATM. There's many co ownerships going behind the scenes, so don't take this list as authoritative.

                              Great list! Cheers!

In case you're interested, according to Skruf's website they're owned by Imperial Tobacco.
