Langdell march yourself down to your local Walgreens or equivalent and lay out 30 cents for a 3ml syringe. Cut the barrel off right at the end of the plunger's travel and smooth it at best you can. Stick a safety pin in the plunger shank right at the spot of its max travel. Stick it in your loose, fill 'er up, pack it down with the plunger a bit, then "inject" it into the right or left front center of your upper lip. Enjoy. Cheap, far less messy, and repeatable. Try about 3/4 ml at first. Around here we call this contraption a "ghetto tool". Works great and lets you get into loose with the least fuss and muss. If you find you like it at some point you may want to spring for the snus implement of maximum grooviness--the Icetool.
Oh yeah be sure and get the 3ml syringe. The bigger ones work but make big honking prises that may be uncomfortable. There is a cheapo plastic commercial snus portioner called the Prismaster. Only two bucks but I've tried both and the ghetto tool works much better.

Darwin, great advice. Have to confess that I already sprung for the Icetool with my first order of loose. It is maximally groovy--honestly, the excuse to get the very cool looking Icetool was part of my motivation to try loose. I know, backwards, but I'm a sucker for gadgets, especially shiny metal ones. I showed it off to one of my work colleagues who said it looked like something James Bond would have. It did make getting the pris made and inserted uber easy.
I'm enjoying my first pris of loose, but remains to be seen if I like it better than portions. (Sorry to anyone for whom that's heresy.) I have a habit of playing with portions with my tongue and squeezing out extra flavor, so that's one difference.

A few days in now, and I can report that I'm enjoying the loose--not enjoying it better than portions, but differently than portions. One thing I'm noticing is that I seem to taste significantly less flavor when using loose compared to portions. Is that typical? Or is there some trick to getting more flavor out of loose?

Just got through my first can of General loose, with a few prises of Ettan, Grov, and Probe along the way, and I'm starting to see what all the hype is about. I'm really getting more full flavor from loose now and greatly enjoying the taste and feel of it in my mouth. And I also enjoy the fact that once the flavor gets going it really does keep going and going. Thanks for your advice, lx--it is true (though inexplicable to me) that I started noticing more flavor after a few times of using loose. Other helpful advice I've gotten was to make a looser pris and combine with liquid refreshment. I'm mainly posting this to make the point that if anyone else felt slightly underwhelmed when using loose at first, give it some time and attention and you might just take a real liking to it.

I didn't notice more flavor with los for the first few months and today is the first time I'm using it at work. Instead of the standard two clicks at home, cutting back to one and a half clicks seems to be the trick for work or public.
I will always see a need for portions because I get tired of doing one or the other exclusively, but nothing I've ordered up to this point beats a two click pris of Ettan los.

This is probably one of the reasons you don't get as much flavor with los, you can't immediately play with it, but with practice you will be able to move it all around. Also, if you pack your prilla too tightly, it won't juice as much, and that will affect flavor too. I give my portions a beating too, and find them easier to use when in public or with clients, but I love, love, love los. It's a richer experience IMO....

LaZ, BTW, I plan to give Oden's Kanel loose a try soon if I can get my hands on some. I love cinnamon but was disappointed with OK portions. Maybe I'll like the loose better.
