Had my first snus & a few Q's

    Hey guys,

So I ran out of my camel Frost tin, and was on my way to the gas station to pick another up (I had planned to make the hour drive to buy some General on Sunday), when I decided to screw it and make the trip now.

So it's been about an hour since I finished a "General Portion" and all I can say is: wow. What a total difference from dip, or camel snus. I really enjoyed it - it reminded me almost of Jasmine tea with pepper.

I bought 8 cans: General Portion, General Mini Mint, General Wintergreen, General White Portion and General Loose los, whatever is proper.

I did have a few questions - At the office, I thought it would be convinient to store a couple tins in my desk drawer... would it be safe to do so? And if so, for how long would they be okay?

And secondly, the back of the tins say to keep the snus in your mouth for 15-60 mins. I had mine in for maybe 90 minutes, or so. Is that okay & proper?

Thank you all so much. I'm truly excited to delve further into this great product!

I have kept between 3-5 various cans in my desk drawer at work, and they are fine. Snus really holds up well. I keep them laying about at home too.

    Welcome to the forum.

You can keep them in for as long as you want. 1-2 hrs is pretty standard around here.

Exactly. There is no "correct" time one must use snus. I usually keep in snus for 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the variety.

Yes, they keep fine, within some reason. Don't leave them out for 4 months, they will degrade with time. But for keeping what you will be using up in reasonable time, fine.

Snus usage is a bit cultural. Swedes tend to keep them in for much shorter. Most of the nicotine will be gone within 30 minutes. But Americans, on average, tend to keep them in longer. I am all over the map. Some days, I can go two hours, other days, may toss it after 30 minutes. Just depends on mood more than anything. But any and all are "correct", use as it pleases you.

I spend alot of time in the hospital, and alot of time telling people with heart and lung disease that smoking is bad. I have snus in most of the day esp. when I have to be on call and nobody notices.

As a side note there are some surgeons that dip during operations. But once you hit that point nobody will ever tell you anything

I'm in retail while I wait for a slot (and an interview with a security company), so oral tobacco is supposed to be a no-no. But no one notices that I've got a portion in almost the entire day... Hehehe...

Anyway, pretty much everyone nailed this already. Snus can stay out of a fridge or freezer for a while. I kept mine in my desk drawer on campus for a month without it going bad or degrading. The taste got a little milder during the hot season of SC, but then I just kept it in the top compartment of a cooler filled with ice. Note, the it was a separate compartment entirely, so no water entered, and it was kept pretty cool. Otherwise, though, it's fine at room temperature for a while.

Duration of keeping a portion in is entirely up to you. If you can still get some decent flavor out of it at 2 hours have at it. The nicotine won't be there too much past 30 minutes, like sage said, but the flavor can last a while.

                Snus as you enjoy it.

Welcome back pangloss, haven't seen you in a while.

Wow, the mental imagery of a doctor dipping while in surgery is funny as hell. I imagine the doctor to be middle aged, rather "Deliverance" like and funny.

That would be one hell of a SNL skit :P

And Wise1, welcome to the boards! I think everyone answered your questions but if you ever have any more, ask away.

if you arent going to refrigerate your snus, one word of advice: DONT SMELL IT! for some reason room temp. snus smells much "stronger" than refrigerated snus.

I used to do the in and out with snus everyday, get home from work - back in the cold, leave at day, take it back out. I stopped doing that when I had 3 or 4 cans I used during the day that I had to take with me, and I've found I can leave them out for days and they're fine. I only refrigerate unopened now.

I was the same for my first 18 months and then just got lazy. Now, any snus I am using with any regularity in just left out once opened. Unused is in freezer. The only snus if my fridge is my elyxr, use one or two a day, my Oynx, use one or two a day, and my Triumph, use about one a month.

Current can has to be at least a year old now, snus still good as day I opened it.

Thanks everyone - I have a few tins out that I'm using regularly, then put the unused ones in the freezer.

                          Thanks again!
