    newb here- questions

    Background:

I've been a pack a day smoker for 18 years, I've tried chantix (worked for a year) and all the other crap to stop smoking. I just found e-cigs and snus about 2 weeks ago. I found this forum through the e-cig forum and i'm very happy that I did. I've stopped smoking with e-cigs, but enjoy snus (american camel).

    Question:

I used to dip alot when I was in the military, and prefered Coppenhagen because it was salty. I like the camel mellow and frost, just a little too sweet.

What brand/type of swedish snus would you recomend to start with?

    I have looked at
    General Onyx
    Oden ES and ES Kanel
    Skruf stark los
    skruf cranberry portion

    thanks for your help guys.

The Skruf Cranberry is good. Not too sweet, but I don't know if it will be to your taste. Personally I enjoy having a can every now and again.

General Onyx is a very good snus, but not an all day snus as the taste is very distinct and almost too lemony IMO.

Haven't had the Oden's so can't comment but that and the Thunder seem to be highly rated by other people. I have a can of Thunder that I got through a trade so if I open it sometime soon I'll report back.

The Skruf stark is awesome and nearly my favourite lös

I'd suggest throwing in a mix of starks

General Extra Sterk (lös and portion are both great), General Sterk, Onyx, Nick & Johnny (very good), Thunder (lös and portion), Oden, Skruf Stark (lös and portion), and then also some regular strength snus like Ettan, Grov and General (lös and portion for all three).

Perhaps also try a more salty snus like Lucky Strike and some of the budget brands like Knox, LD and Granit lös.

      Welcome to Snuson Ozmodius

Sounds from your descriptions that you will love Swedish snus right from the start. My best recommendation for someone new is just go get Northerner's Top 10 box. It has the top selling snus, it is a really good mix which will give you a great introduction to snus. Once you have been using a few weeks, tell us what you are loving and not, and we can recommend better from there

Gustavus and Lucky Strike are both fairly salty. The Skruf brands are low in the salt dept. I haven't had Odens, but I suspect it's low in salt also. You might like Grov. It's probably the closest to Copenhagen(but still pretty different), has medium high salt content, and a "plain" tobacco taste.

Agreed with Sagedil. My only reservation in recommending the top 10 box is the inclusion of Catch Eucalyptus (one of the few snus that I didn't bother finishing the can) and Wise/Oomph (which is a mini portion). Strip out those two and throw in the Oden's and another Stark and you have a great selection IMHO.

Edit: Sagedil made another good point there. Be willing to try a lot of snus to find the brands you really like. Took me over a year to find my favourites and I still throw in a random can every order.

I thought the Catch Eucalyptus was horrible. But a few (VERY few) folks here like it. At the least, I think it is good for newbies to try a snus they hate. Just helps them figure out the shape of the walls and all that.

The try out boxes are generally cheaper than buying them individually. That gives you some financial cushion if some of the snus sucks. Also, you never know what you'll end up liking. You need to check all preconceived notions at the door, and go in with an open mind. Swedish snus is like no other tobacco product out there, and you might be surprised at some of the flavors you enjoy.

I just started snus this week and I would also recommend trying some of the grab bags (snuscentral had a great deal on a 10 can sampler called Bag o' snus - and they have a coupon code in their blog for first time orders that ended up costing me less than $30 even with shipping.)

They shipped a good portion sampler based on the reviews I've seen, all 10 were different.

                  1. Goteborgs Rape #2 (my fav so far)
                  2. Nick & Johnny Stark (my second fav, I couldn't handle it all day though - to much nicotine buzz)
                  3. Skruf Cranberry (Seemed somewhat bland to me)
                  4. Skruf Original (haven't tried)
                  5. Skruf Stark White (A little flowery/oily odd taste at first, not so much bad, as just different - not sure on this one)
                  6. General White (Decent, a little saltier than the others to me)
                  7. Grovsnus (haven't tried)
                  8. Taboca (haven't tried)
                  9. Jakobssons Classic
                  10. Kronan (so far the only cheap one in the bunch, not bad but didn't last but about 30 mins for me)

It's been amazingly easy to stop smoking, something I couldn't do with the e-cigs, and I have enjoyed every one I have tried, so much so that I re-ordered another sampler and a couple of specific cans from them (Lucky Strike Portions, and Thunder Frost - based on reviews/recommendations here) last night. I think I'll keep bouncing around brands for a while.

N&J is the best tasting so far, but it's an ass kicker GR #2 is a close second - but very different. I've been wanting to try the catch brands, my first snus was Camel Frost, but it was sickly sweet and had that horrible synthetic sweetener after taste, I tried the Mellow, but it too had that aftertaste. I tried another Frost last night just to compare, and I can't believe RJR thinks that product will sell - hell, they're having a hard time giving it away.

Welcome, I'm new too, but this is a great forum - good folks and a wealth of info.

My first snus experience was with The Northerner's top 10 box and I actually liked the Catch Euc for my first few months lol. I don't order it anymore, but I don't think it's terrible. I would pop in a Catch Eucalyptus way before even trying a General Wintergreen. That just sounds horrible to me. I have a couple foil-pack samples that I'm scared to try, so I'm holding onto my General samples for someone who I think I could convert to snus -- the new minty varieties seem to appeal to noobs, just as the Catch did to me when I first started. I didn't get any Oomph with my try-out box though, and from what I've heard, that's a good thing.

True. It is cheaper, but I just did a dummy run on the try out box minus the ones I dislike and added in a tin of Skruf Stark lös and GES lös instead and it works out about $6-$7 more expensive - lucky bastards that don't have to pay EU tax ;-)

Personally I think having a can or two of lös and more starks in the mix is worth it - especially if you were a heavy smoker.

lxskllr is right though about not having any preconceived notions though, and as Sagedil rightly pointed out it might be best to find out what you like for yourself. Case in point is Phantom Blue. Loved by some. Hated by others.

Oh and as Sagedil has mentioned before in other posts don't order rolls of anything until you are convinced you enjoy it.

I tried those General Wintergreen samplers, and well, I am not a wintergreen fan, but they taste sorta nice, even to me, for about half an hour or a little less, and then I tell myself I just don't like wintergreen. But try them, as far as wintergreen goes, they made a nice snus of it.

I would recomend oden extra stark kanel and i would recomend it to anyone. it has a great pure tobacco flavor with a hint of cinnomin which makes it taste better. not to mention the kick you get from it. first time i tried it i had to put my head down for a sec to recoup.

just tried thunder frosted today and didn't ecpect it to have such a kick to it. it makes me feel nice at work 8)

I'm on of the few, the proud, the catch eucalyptus lovers.

Everybody has very distinct tastes, so it won't be the same for everybody. I love Catch and nobody else seems to. I absolutely hate Skruff Cranberry, but everybody else seems to like it.

Also, to the original poster, when you find something you like, don't order a ton of it and stop experimenting. Just buy a few cans of what you like and an assortment of new stuff. This is just in case you get tired of what you thought was your favorite.

I wasn't a fan of the Wintergreen at all. It just tastes like every wintergreen american dip ever made. If somebody likes American dip, they'd probably love it, but it just wasn't my thing.
