New To Snus

Hello all. I am a new snuser and just recently got my sampler order containing the following.



I am a long time tobacco user. From cigarettes to the occasional cigar, American dip and hookah. My first snus was the camel brands a few weeks ago and I enjoyed both flavors (Frost and Mellow).

I tried my first Swedish snus yesterday. It was the General White Portion. The taste was something I was not expecting. As mentioned, I've tried American dip and rather enjoyed those on occasion. The General White was overly salty and the flavor was pretty strong (almost unbearable).

My question is, is this a normal taste or did my order go bad during shipment? It was shipped on April 1st and I received it on the 6th. Outdoor temps hit 90° this weekend in Arizona.

I love General White portion so much!! The thing that gets me is the smell, as soon as you open it. I'm sure your order is fine..try it again today. I bet you will enjoy it more. It's kind of like the first time you drink coffee or have a cigarette...its awful, but later you really begin to enjoy and love it. The Goteborgs is a flavored one you might really like. I loved it at first but it really got sick of it. Try the others too! but for me, general original and general white are just the best.

btw...these are nothing like camel snus. Extremely different. I actually really like camel mellow snus. Everyone I've met seems to hate it, except me. It has such a unique flavor, unlike anything.

Yeah, the smell is what really got me at first. It's like a strong ammonia smell. I have a Catch Eucalyptus in right now and it's really not bad at all. I had to spit the first couple hits of the juice because it's salty at first. I might order a can of loose to see how that is. From reading the info on this forum, loose tends to be less salty.

The Camel mellow is like a sweet tea flavor. Smells like Lipton to me.

Yeah exactly, it has that awful ammonia smell to it. Here a trick, leave it open for an hour or so, this will help it fade. The flavor is nothing like the smell, trust me! When using it a few times, in a day or so that smell will also fade. It's defiantly not bad! You will get used to that salty flavor...I like it, because it brings out the tobacco flavor.

For camel mellow...lol yeah it is like lipton! I may pick up a tin of it if my order of general doesn't come today!

The biggest thing most new users of Swedish snus notices is the salt. This is temporary. As you body gets acclimated to it, soon you won't notice it. Typical time to get acclimated is about two weeks,

The taste is really off putting to new users, especially folks who have only tried Camel. Again, it takes a bit to get used to it, but just about every person who has made that switch over the past year quickly comes to love the taste of the Swedish. Again, it takes about a week or two to fully make that transition,

So give it a chance. trust us, and I promise, soon you will be singing the praises of Swedish snus too.

Haha. Okay, I'll take your word for it. I have 6 cans sitting in the freezer and I WILL try each and every one.

As mentioned, I used to dip on occasion. My personal favs were Skoal Wintergreen Long Cut and Hawken. I used to love Copenhagen but my lip couldn't take the fine cut too often.

Up until recently I was smoking about a ½ pack a day. Over the entire weekend (Friday-Sunday) I smoked 5 cigarettes which is quite an accomplishment for me.

I used to smoke about 5 or 6 cigs a day...but I now use snus (2 or 3 portions) during the day, and a cig before bed with a glass of wine or a mixed drink. Idk for me, snus and alcohol don't mix well. Gets me sick...maybe to much nicotine or something.

Here's an update from yesterday.

I got home yesterday, opened all of my cans and aired them out for about an hour (as suggested in a previous post). After that time passed, I went for a Gote Rape. Definitely helped with the ammonia smell and the saltiness was not bad at all. After dinner, I tried the Roda and then finished off my evening with a Catch Eucalyptus.

Left home this morning with Gote and Catch in my pocket ready for the work day. I must say, I am really starting to enjoy the Gote Rape. I thought Catch would've been my utility snus being that I like the minty flavored stuff (wintergreen dip, menthol cigarettes, etc) but I've only had one today compared to the 3 Gote Rape portions.

I can't wait to get home now and see if my impression of General White changes. I may even muster enough courage to pop a Thunder Extra in before the night is over.

So far so good. My only gripe now is that the flavor doesn't last as long as I would like with the Gote. I would say about 45 minutes, maybe an hour tops. After that hour passes I have a strong urge to pop in another one so I'm guessing the nic content may not be strong enough for my liking. May have to try some original portions as opposed to the whites I've been having. I can hear the Skruf Original calling for me as we speak. :lol:

Welcome to the site. It seems that you've gotten the exact same advice I was given 30 days ago when I quit smoking....they were right btw. I hated the way Swedish snus smelled, but the ammonia smell is a byproduct of the pasturization process and means that it's fresh. If you ever open a can of snus and don't smell the ammonia, it's not fresh, or it's not true swedish snus..lol

Ilove Gote Rape and roda lacket. Be careful with the strong portions, they pack a kick. I use a strong portion first thing in the morning to jump start the nic engine, and then use reg portions through the day (only to supplement sterk portions as needed to curb cravings), and then when I get home I use los after dinner.

It will take time for you to determine what you like, try several different flavors and types of snus because your tastes will change the longer you've been off the smokes. Have fun and ask questions, you are among people that have been where you are.
