    Smoker switching to snus

I smoke cigarettes. I tried the camel snus recently. Stuff wasn't strong enough for my liking, but I like getting my fix this way SO much better. I love the part where I can walk up stairs without getting winded, or the part where I don't reek like smoke after using it. Problem is, camel snus sucks. Really bad.

I was looking into that thunder snus. The part where its extra strong made it sound perfect and too strong at the same time. I want the stuff to be strong enough to quell my cig cravings, but I don't want to get that buzz you got with your first cigarette ever every time I use the stuff. Other one I was looking at was general, because they have a wintergreen flavor and everyone raves about them, but I wasn't sure if it would be strong enough.

So what is a good real snus for a beginner? I want something with a wintergreen flavor, I figured this much out with dip a couple years back. I want something with enough nicotine to satisfy without completely knocking me on my ass everytime. I smoke about a half a pack a day, but I'm quite addicted (a day without a cig would be hell) if that helps. Thanks guys.

Since you're an ex-smoker, like myself, you probably have a very high nicotine tolerance. I wouldn't be too worried about using the strong stuff. I've used Skruf Stark and Claq Qui and barely notice any difference in rush from the regular level stuff. I do find the stronger levels help quell cravings much faster.

Give Thunder a shot. Some people like it, others don't... Some say it has a very chemically aftertaste if I remember correctly...

But before you try it, be sure to read the post about someone who was using Thunder and then got some "thunder down under" if you catch my drift. It did not end well. I'll post a link

camel has been assumed to have 6/mg of nicotine per portion, which is somewhere between a swedish mini and a regular.

regular strength is 8mg. It's worked time and time again for x-smokers. most mailorder sites will list the amount of nicotine in the portion, and anything over 9mg is usually considered extra strong.

If you dig the wintergreen or want to stick with flavored, I'd try the higher end normal strength portions, and if you fall in love, see how cheap you can go and get the same flavor.

Also note that camel snus is manufactured like a swedish "white" portion, it's dry. The common swedish snus is brown and moist, and only certain varieties are available in white. It's up to you which you want to try

Offroad Wintergreen, trust me, you like wintergreen, you'll like this one. Methyl Salicylate up to the eyeballs, nothing quite like it in snus  . I've tried both the portions and the los. Also the long cut los, which I personally don't recommend. I would go with the portions to start out.

Welcome to the forum, interesting name 8)

PS Nice to see another person ditching the cigs for snus

          Welcome to Snuson username.

Definitely give Thunder a try. As I have posted many times, it gives a very strong and long nicotine kick without coming on too strong. I switched over from cigarettes 2+ years ago, and used strong almost exclusively the first few months. I was very poor so used just the various strong Offroad products that were available then. eventually, I made my way to regular portions and now only have a few strongs a day typically.

Let me give you the same advice I have given everyone else about switching from cigarettes. Just don't even worry about it. If you feel like smoking, go ahead. I had no intention of quitting when I started with snus, but over a period of about a month, I simply smoked less and less until the day came where I just stopped buying them. The snus took care of it on it's own, the longer I used it, the more I just preferred it to cigarettes. Will still have one about once a month, but as I always say, now it is when I want one, not when I need one.

          And again, welcome.

I've been looking around at the various brands. Decided to start out with the normal strength, simply because there are so many more choices at that level. If I get used to the strong snus, then 80% of the snus market would be too weak. I've decided to order the 5 different brands that looked most appealing to me. Tell me what you think:

            Lucky strike white portion
            Offroad Wintergreen white portion
            Offroad Coffee Vanilla white portion
            Pall Mall White Portion
            General wintergreen white portion

I'm already positive I would prefer the white portion, so I'm going with that. I'm trying the pall mall and lucky strike because I'm from the states so those are some brands I'm familiar with already. Trying the offroad and general wintergreens because I love wintergreen so I want to sample a couple of different attempts at it to see what fits. And I added on the coffee vanilla offroad just because it sounded decent. Any good choices in that list?

Pall Mall and Luckys really have nothing in common with the cigs except the name. Just FYI.

I would still recommend a couple of stark types. I find they really help get over that first smoke of the morning craving. After several months I use 2 stark portions a day and regular the remainder.

                Not so many :^P

I'd stay away from V2 for your first portion outing, or at least limit it to 1 tin. Retro, Catch Eucalyptus, Onyx... A bunch of others I'd substitute with.

                  Howdy,

I thought this thread might help you some:

(There are some new ones that came out since then)

I would agree, you should get some sterks too. And throw at least one can of loose in there. You never know.

                  Cheers!

Just remember, you're getting more nicotine from snus, but oral delivery follows a smoother curve and builds up. You won't feel almost instant nicotene, as with inhalation. Its still a very nice medium between cigarettes and the smoking cessation products (not to mention much cheaper), and the ability to control our own dose easily has helped a lot of us quit the cancer sticks.

Snus doesn't really work that way. As I mentioned, I started out using sterks the first few months, then broadened out my snus. Interesting study the Sweede's did. They gave folks who usually used regular snus. measured their blood nicotine level, then gave them mini's with less nicotine and remeasured the nicotine level. They had expected, like smokers smoking a lower nicotine brand, the users would just use more. But they didn't, they were all happy with a lower nicotine level in their system.

Sterks are useful to have around. there are just moments I feel like the stronger nicotine kick, and am grateful I just have to reache for a sterk to satisfy that.

You will LOVE both the Pall Mall and Lucky Strike. the Offroad, well, that is a bit more controversial. What I first used but they do taste funny. Some folks like, or don't mind them, but many folks hate them.

I know you said you think you will prefer Whites. After a year, I suddenly switched to almost all whites. But still, you should try some regulars. You simply never will know what you actually do like, not what you think you are supposed to like.

You SHOULD try the Thunder Wintergreen: great flavor and just the right strength. They're also less salty than almost all other snus. Remember that the nic hit from a strong snus is less "explosive" than a cigarette, although it lasts much longer. So the strong ones are intermediate between regular snus and cigs.

Another good thing about Thunder and other strong ones is that you'll be saving money. It's possible to go through a tin per day with regulars, but that simply never happens with the stronger stuff.

By the way, Lucky Strike Whites are good if you want to feel like you've been smoking. But they're not very strong.

Damn. It's kind of a bitch that they don't sell this stuff around here. Having to order it makes it complicated

Weird you say that, because that's another thing that I love about snus...

First off, it's GREAT that they don't sell it around here. Otherwise, you'd be paying "sin" taxes up the badonkadonk. I know, I know, you're supposed to claim this stuff on your taxes... but it's considered a food product in Sweden, and I'm ordering from Sweden, so is there a tax on imported food products? Just curious.

I also love receiving stuff in the mail. I love the wait, the anticipation, frantically refreshing the tracker on UPS, and when it finally hits the door step there's this rush of excitement. *shrug*

As btrip mentioned, shopping for snus is almost magical. I truely feel like a kid in a candy store every time I order more. And I have been doing this for 2 years. But is it an indescribeable special feeling every time I go to Northerner and Buysnus.

Give it time, I bet you will come to feel the same way!!
