Yeah, snusers call this phenomenon the 'burning sensation'. It happens with every snus-brand, most probably due to the salt-content in the snus. This will pass after about a week, when your gums are used to the stuff.Originally posted by mizanationi'm in new york and the only snus i can find is general and catch. i am currently trying the general wintergreen. it's a little harsh but i suppose it's because i'm a first time snusser...

Aye, my lip was a bit tender for the first week or so of snussing - thankfully it passes rather quickly!

Not the salt, but the soda they put in to lower the pH and freebase the nicotine. Snus is, therefore, a bit alkaline (basic) and has a burn because of that.Originally posted by chainsnuserYeah, snusers call this phenomenon the 'burning sensation'. I really don't want to start some hairsplitting, as I think, your explanation is perfect - but ... isn't soda a salt? :?

Well thanks to a trade with mikemck, I just got a can today and tried it. It is pretty good, it didn't really knock my socks off or anything. But, I might order it again. Maybe not a whole roll but a few cans here and there. I do now understand what was said about the peppery element of it, it's kind of nice.

Technically yes - if I'm a chemist and you're a chemist then that's what we mean when we say "salt", but to any other english-speaking person, I think "salt" means "table salt" (NaCl), which is also an ingredient in snus.Originally posted by chainsnuserHi Zero,Originally posted by ZeroNot the salt, but the soda they put in to lower the pH and freebase the nicotine. Of course! It's exactly the same in german. 'Salt' usually means table salt.
To be honest, I wasn't absolutely sure about the detailed reasons for the burning, but I was sure, that it was due to one of the 'salts', used in snus.
Cheers!
