I found these comments by Jimmy Karlsson, R/D for www.Gotlandssnus.com in another thread to be enlightening:

the tobaccotax in Sweden is SEK336.- per KG thats also make loose snus a verry expencive product with verry low margin for the snus manufacturers.

This is also why you can see the GRAMS in the cans decrising all the time..

Let's hope the writing is not on the wall for all you Losers .... aah, I mean, LOS-ers!!

I can buy that argument to a point but if tax and weight were a determining factor then why aren't they really trying to push mini portions?

It comes down to people being idiots. It doesn't really cost more for lös by weight. The taxes are all the same gram for gram. People would flip out if lös cost twice as much as portions, but that's it's true value since you're getting twice as much snus. It's just like our incredible shrinking coffee cans. Instead of raising the price, they make the can smaller. Boy, we're really saving money now! Coffee hasn't increased in price in over a year! :^S

I don't think lös would have to cost twice as much, but probably close to it. They're saving money on the portioning process, and the waste that goes along with it, so that would save a few cents. It's just like handrolling cigarettes. It was fortuitously cheaper for me to roll my own, but by the same token, I'd have paid more to do so. I just preferred handrolling. Same with lössnus. It's great that it's cheaper, but I'd pay more for lös. It's a better experience than portions.

I would gladly pay a bit more, not double though, for los as well. I am wondering if this increased demand for portions in Sweden would have anything to do with marketing. It also seems like they are decreasing portion counts as well as I have seen several new offerings with less than 24 portions in them. Who knows what the future holds but it's probably not good. Speaking of coffee, have you seen the Starbucks VIA packets. Who would have thought you could have sold a cup of instant coffee for over $1.00?

It's damned good instant though :^D

Really, it's worth a try just to see how good instant coffee can be. My daughter got some for xmas. I can't remember what I paid, but it's probably cheaper in a grocery store. I'm not really the market for something like that, but if you compare the price to convenience store coffee, it compares favorably, as does the taste. The best use I can think of is for travelers. If you can find hot water, you can have a cup of coffee that's /almost/ as good as brewed, and likely better than what you'll find at 7-11 at 3am :^)

I never thought you would let them get to you! You know you can go to Trader Joes and get the same thing for $3.00 a jar?

I don't have Trader Joes near me :^( I'm not a Starbucks fan, but my daughter loves them. She wanted Starbucks stuff for xmas, and you know how kids are. The branding is almost as important as the product. She got a travel cup, some instant flavored coffee, a $25 gift card, and some chocolate covered nuts and espresso beans. She was thrilled with it :^)

I'm not a Starbucks hater like some. I think their coffee's good, and the price is reasonable if you just get a regular coffee. They make the big bucks on the fancy drinks, which I don't buy. I may have a cup soon. I lost a bet to to my daughter, and I owe her a cup of coffee, and something to eat from Starbucks :^D We'll go to Barnes and Noble(they have an in house Starbucks), and she can take her Nook there, and give it a workout while she drinks her coffee :^)

Vårgårda Skog is a pretty good snus out of JTI.
